Dana 27 Front End Locker/lsd?

I may have missed it if there has been some previous discussion on this one but I'm looking for mid to low cost options for a front end locker. I'm not sure if I want a selectable locker since this is a mud vehicle not a crawler but I'm open to it. I have the power-lok in the rear and it's awesome so a similar limited slip up front would probably be exactly what I'm looking for. What do you guys like for a lower cost option?

I wouldn't spend much more money than the cost of a lunchbox style locker in a dana 27.

In short, I think you've found the two primary options: either a powr lok limited slip unit (these were OEM options at the time) or a lock right automatic locker. There is probably some other, rarer, hard to find options, like the Gleason limited slip, but you've got the two best options. IIRC, There are no selectable locker options for a D27.

For me, the point of adding a traction device to a 27 is to eliminate the weak case. If you go powr lok, you have done that. You don't really get much more traction from a LSD, but a much stronger overall unit. (Still only as good as the 10 spline axles and u joints).

I have had a front lockrite for a long time and it gets the job done.
warnings though: 1) when it locks, it will make steering very difficult if you have manual steering; 2) if you are going to be re-doing bearings etc: consider investing that money in building a disc dana30 or roxor44 that comes with a warranty.

Is there a power lok for dana 27?

Exactly. But I did blow up the spider gears first and the Powr-Lok does fix that. It's also usually easier to replace axle shafts rather than pull the whole axle assembly apart to fix spider gears and the ring/pinion after the increased freedom of those spider gear teeth have found new cozy homes.

The best cure is to just replace the whole axle with a D30 for which you can purchase all sorts of moderately heavy duty components. Personally, I will not waste money doing anything to a D25/D27 unless one is building a 100% restoration.

Yes, and we have noticed that sometimes we are just moving the weak link further to the center of the jeep, which is not good.

I wish Spicer had some sort of simple hp or torque rating on there driveshaft fuses.

The youngest narrow track 30 is almost 40 years old now. Most of them need thoroughly gone through at this point ( I've done 2 in the last 5 years) they are not as plentiful as they were and are fetching $2-300 now.
Personally I won't be doing another, will go Roxor 44.

But do we really know what sort of abuse the Roxor axle is capable of? Even on the D25/D27, it isn't the ring and pinion that usually disintegrate.

Yeah if I do anything major to upgrade it will be a roxor axle swap with another power lok to match the rear. Was wondering if there was an inexpensive upgrade to get a little more out of my 27 but it sounds like it may not be worth the money and effort.

Henri .....I run that one, but model # 2110 LR , in my front D-30 . Perfectly capable & a competent locker, IMO

True that. The 27 I was going to use had a cracked carrier and the Lock Right was substantially more than the 30 unit. It went right in the dumpster.
If I wasnt going to get heavy on it and I could drop a locker in I'd do it but anything amiss in there its not worth the cost of the parts.

If you're making a rock crawler, the Roxor's are far from perfect. Issues:
    • 19 spline inner axles
    • 10 spline outer axles
    • Strange offset to the carrier so standard D44 gears don't work
All this can be fixed with aftermarket 30 spline inners, a new 30 spline locker, new gears, 27 spline outers, and 27 spline hubs. By the time you do all that, it's less of a good deal. It's mostly good for a housing and disk brakes.

...but for less serious Jeeping, it's probably not bad as is as long as you can get the gearing you need. They do make spacers to use standard D44 gear sets. A 19 spline lunch box locker and you're a lot better off than a 27.

I have stayed out of the roxor debate, mostly because I will build a 44 from a Waggy or Chevy 44 first. But my questions are- do they accept standard dana 44 parts? Are they strong enough (in my case 37" tires)? Can you use Dana shafts, spindles, bearings, ball joints, etc for spares?
