71 Dual Master Cylinder Plumbing

    Picked up a 71 cj5 with 10” brakes last fall and replaced the the wheel cylinders, brake lines and brakes this spring. It had a new dual master cylinder also installed before I got it.
    Its had a pull to the right this summer, hardly noticeable when applying 1/2 brake but beyond that have to correct with the steering wheel.
    This weekend I finally pulled the left front drum to look around and bled it to make sure there was no air in the wheel cylinder.
    While searching here I saw that with dual MC that the outlet closest to the firewall is supposed to feed the fronts and the one further from the firewall to the rears.
    Today I decide to look and guess what, its plumbed the opposite way; closest to firewall to bottom of distribution block going to the rear and top going to the splitter going to the fronts.
    I assume this isn’t the cause of my issue but just want to confirm that my lines are indeed reversed and should be switched.
    Anyway, any thoughts/ comments on this plumbing issue and pulling to right are appreciated. FF46C980-0B98-4A9B-8E0F-8B6273146ACC.jpeg

    Todd, having very similar issues with my 71 CJ5. Brakes were terrible, I call them my Fred Flintstone brakes! Got a new MC, replaced wheel cylinders, shoes. Then I noticed the lines from the MC were swapped. Then I noticed the MC is not really the correct one for this model Jeep. Also, don't really see the purpose of the distribution block that mounts inside the frame rail. On 72' and later models, this become a proportional valve body. It looks like the Crown Automotive #J0945556 is the correct MC.
    Anybody else out there can help clear this up? MC brake lines.jpg Crown MC.jpg

  4. not quite like mine, but may have changed in 10 years difference.

  5. mine has a large plug that takes a 1 1/8 wrench

    When I pulled the wheel apart it appeared that the adjuster wasn’t positively engaging every time against the star wheel. I bent the tab a little and now its working so it appears that was the issue.
    When Twin2 replied that his was the same way I moved on to the next issue and lost interest in this one, though I’m still interested in knowing if it truly matters.

    Todd, The dual master cylinder was mandated from 1968 on, for all vehicles in the US.

    Todd, looks like you and I both have the newer style (1972-75) master cylinder. It also shows the front port on the MC goes to the rear brakes.

    I don't agree with diagram above :confused: #8
    picture I posted was from factory set up . lines never changed
    but if you use the snap on top master (newer) . maybe

    Ron,
    Yes I agree this is a much disputed issue, but I assumed that the Crown Automotive J0945556 MC shown above is a direct replacement for the factory MC on the Jeep CJ5 V6 from 1966-71. It clearly shows the front port is for the rear brakes. Also, the smaller reservoir would go to the rears, because the rear wheel cylinders are a smaller bore (13/16" Dia.) versus the fronts which are 1" Dia. bore.

    Focker That's a terrible idea...What time? Staff Member

    That's correct. The rear brakes get the secondary outlet.

    Don't think of it that way, think of the front being closest to the plunger (not the front of the Jeep). The port closest to the plunger is the Primary braking system (front brakes).

    P= Primary... Front brakes.
    S= Secondary... Rear brakes.
