While wandering through the junkyard last week i was looking at a tj rear drum setup it looks very close to what i have and would let me ditch the t-case parking brake

i was curious to know since some of you have tjs do they run a d44 rear?

    boopiejones I can’t drive 55

My tj (2001 Sahara) has a D44 rear. My understanding is that the d30 was standard for the front and D35 was standard for the rear with D44 being optional equipment. Only exception was the rubicon models which were d44 front and rear.

You thinking of getting a diff rear drum or drilling the TJ drum for 5x5.5? They are 5x4.5 stock.

I got a crusty D35 behind the garage if you need pics of something.

There are lots more differences than just bolt pattern and flanged axles. Not a bolt on if that's what you are looking for.

72-75 CJ D44 rear brakes should be a direct swap as well as early Wagoneer. All of these have axle parking brakes. Otherwise, you could go to a Lever Lock type hydraulic parking system.

72-5 cj rears are pretty hard to find arent they.
I have thought of that hydro deal just wonder how it would hold if left for hours.. we have them on some stuff at work and ours domt hold much past30 mins

    One thing to think about.
Swapping in rear brakes from another rig will probably result in a larger rear braking area. Chances are you will need to re-balance the front to rear braking by upgrading the front brakes or using a proportioning valve. What you don't want is to install the new rear brakes, then having the rears to lock up under heavy/emergency braking, causing a crash.

Both of these Wagoneer sites www.ifsja.org www.fsjnetwork.com have WTB (want to buy) forums. It's hard to get registered on IFSJA, but not fsjnetwork AFAIK.

If you found Wagoneer brakes, Jeep used 11"x2" Bendix brakes for the Wagoneer from its beginning through 1973. There were both early tapered axles through the late 60s, and then flanged axles through 1973. These brakes have a 5 on 5.5" pattern, and bolt to a Dana 44 rear axle. The flanged axle brakes should be identical to what was used on the CJ '72-75. The earlier brakes might be even better for your purpose, if you currently have a tapered axle.

Way back when, you could buy instructions for how to convert the 11"x2" Bendix brakes used by Ford on the F-100 pickup to Jeep axles. I believe it involved redrilling the backing plate and a spacer? Something like that. If I could locate F-100 backing plates, I'd size it up using a CJ drum.

The bolt pattern only matters to the drum. Maybe you could try some other 11"x2" backing plates with intermediate CJ drums. The Delco brakes used on the rears of later Wagoneers are 11"x2", though I have no idea how they would mate with the CJ drums. CJs from '78 on used a 10"x1.75" drum on the wrong kind of axle though. Looks like a YJ (not a TJ?) also has 10"x1.75" brakes ... maybe you could use YJ backing plates and '78-up CJ drums. You'd have to assess how to attach the backing plates to the axle ends at the right depth for your CJ drums.
