Bumperettes - Fitment?

Looking at the bumperettes on the market now, there appear to be a few variations. The cheapest and simplest look the same from Omix or Crown and are specified for '76 and up. There are also military-style repops (MB style) for about twice the price of the simple Omix/Crown ones.

What's the difference in the bolt pattern between the '76-up rear cross member and the early-style that's on the earlys and intermediates? Bolt spacing same or different? MB style will bolt on?

The military ones do not fit the early CJ xmembers, at least not straight. I used to have a set on Tonk & got so tired of seeing them crooked I gave them away.

Just my $0.02 guys, I have the Stainless ones on my Jeep, they are not bumpers really, too soft. The real Bumperettes are more like spring steel as we called in the day. I got bumped and the stainless bumper gave, the good thing, I fixed it and nobody knows. So I guess what I am saying is the original's are probably the best bumpers.

we had looked into them for my buddy's jeep
but in order to use them license plate wouldn't fit on rear cross member
so it was a no go

Don't care about the license plate since it's not under the light any more. No idea about bolt-on compatibility? Possible the license plate issue is why they don't apply to earlier than '76.

Have you checked into the M38A1 bumperettes? I'd think that logically they'd bolt up to an Early Cj5.

I like them, they make handy and secure steps.

Comparing a 55 cj5 to an 86 cj7. What I believe would be the bumperette holes on the cj5 are 4 holes 3/8" in diameter spaced approximately 5 1/2" horizontally and 1 7/8" vertically. On the cj7 there are four horizontal slots 3/8" x 3/4" spaced approximately 5 1/2" horizontally and 1 1/8" vertically.

I have the Omix ones on mine... I've dinged them on some rocks and can stand on them confidently. I had to drill one hole for each, the other hole lined up with existing stuff. backuplights.jpg

I had to make adapter plates for mine too, one hole was off the crossmember all together.[IMG]

Yeah, I like them too - but the repops are expensive at more than twice the price of the Omix/Crown parts (ca $60 to $150+) . Some originals might be nice, but I can't imagine they would be cheaper than the MB/M38/M38A1 repops.

I've seen the M38A1 originals on ebay for about $50, IIRC. The genuine originals are way strong. Much better than my YJ.

Some good info and parts numbers here. Willys M Jeeps Forums-viewtopic-BUMPERETTES

The M38 and M38A1 both use the same bumperette as far as I can tell. I replaced one of mine on the M38 with one from a M38A1 and it was a direct bolt up.

The ones on my DJ slightly block the license plate but the plate bolts up fine on the slots in the cross member.
