Value Of A '70 Cj5?

Found a '70 I think, maybe '71 (flange axles and 225) in a salvage yard. Body is not too bad, missing front fenders and maybe hood, radiator and grill, engine appears freshly rebuilt. Stored inside but I suspect no title. Is it worth $1000?, that is what they are asking. I don't need it, got plenty of projects but hate to pass up a deal.

do you need it for parts . or a project
do you have storage for it
no title and incomplete 400 would be my max offer . I always consider a engine a core . unless I can hear it run
preferably with a complete exhaust on it

I would not buy a complete car from a salvage yard, though I kinda doubt they will sell a complete vehicle without a title. They have time on their side, and it's their business model to wait until someone meets their price.

If you want a bargain, search the various places for an unfinished project. Life often interferes with completion of these vehicles, and they can sell for fire sale prices.

 

A flanged 44 is worth $400 bucks....

 

Pardon me if I seem unnecessarily critical here - I'm just pointing this out.

If you had the axle out of the Jeep, the axle were in good condition (currently unknown), and someone near you really needed this axle, you could probably get $400. As I mentioned, wrecking yards keep wrecks and sell them piece by piece until they have to scrap them. They'd probably take a few hundred for that axle, maybe less. And Iowa is not Colorado ... If the tub is in really nice shape (ie not Iowa rusty), and you need the tub, you might buy the whole Jeep and sell off the parts you don't need. Or offer them say $500 for the tub only. There's a lot of overhead in buying this stuff just because the price is right. The OP asked whether it was cheap enough to speculate on ... nope, IMO.

You could make an offer and ask them to call you before they scrap it. Maybe they'll sell it, maybe they'll call you at some point, maybe they'll scrap it rather than bargain. Junkyard owners are a contrary lot, in my experience.

 

one yard I went out of business now , the guy would dicker the price . saying it was worth half price of new/rebuilt part.
it was one of them things . I always hated about going to this place . on the other hand . they seemed to have a few old cars .

left a few parts right there on counter

the P&P here mostly new stuff . but sometimes you get a deal . on 50% weekends
