Exhaust Routing

How are you guys routing your exhaust off a 225 header setup? I have mine exiting right under the seats and it’s too loud for me and I would like to move to the rear but don’t see an easy path. Also, what type of muffler are you running?

    Thanks,

    Chip.

I am also interested in the approaches taken as I'll be doing this in the near future.

I've seen the muffler behind the rear differential, angled from driver side to passenger side. I believe that this might have been the factory routing.

I've also seen one routing that had the muffler on the left side before the rear differential, with 'interesting' loop over the differential in the left wheel well.

I know these explanations are useless without pictures. I will try find a picture of both.

Are you using the manifolds or headers?

I am running headers, I have both right and left mufflers.

That is awesome, I was hoping for something less custom and more muffler shop:).

I ditched the headers and went back to manifolds so I could tuck the exhaust inside the frame rails and exit out the back. I didn't like having mufflers for rock sliders :D. I'm very happy with my choice. I'm using two cherry bomb type mufflers now, they were small and fairly easy to fit under there. Unfortunately I feel like it's still too loud, would love to tuck some better mufflers under there.

My setup isn't amazing but I did do it myself. It was really hard for me since it was all new skills to learn.

You can see one of the exits in this photo, the other side matches

This is looking from the back. My exhaust stays inside the frame and then goes under the frame right at the axle to exit just behind the rear tires.

Thought I had a better pic of my mufflers but I guess not, you can see part of the cherry bomb here

I don't have many great pics - but I run manifolds (front dump on driver side and rear dump on passenger side) into a single exhaust. The driver bends down under the manifold and goes back along the inside of the driver frame rail. The passenger dumps rear and goes across under the transmision/TC and merges with the the driver. Downstream of the Y-junction it stays inside the driver frame rail and goes over the rear axle and exhausts behind the driver side rear wheel (I run a rear tank so it was the best place to exit).

Here is the junction - you can just see the passenger manifold to pipe flange. I have the OEM skid plate and the pipe fits above and the behind the bent up front lip of the skid so its got a bit of protection.

I hate how the guy installed mine. He put the muffler 2 inches from the back of the tcase so my od won't go in untill i fix it. Also ran the tailpipe out the back so the exhaust fumes blow back into the jeep.

yes both sides are routed same
much better than when they were just before tires
a california muffler shop did them the first time

I think I have the same Flowmasters, I will take your pictures with me to the muffler shop and route mine the same way.

    Thanks for your help.

Nothing like the warm and fuzzy feeling when you open a link like that and see your own work. All kidding aside, I would say that was my best liked and most gratifying mod. No regrets there.

Your other option - SuperTraps - they have tune-able disks and it's what I'm running on both the '49 and '51.
