Valve train noise? Doesn't really sound like an exhaust leak. Pull the valve covers, take a look. If you can't see what it is, start it up and watch for issues.. Your oil pressure is not so high it will make a mess.

of the 30 something years of owning the jeep . every blue moon . it will do the same thing as your hearing . a very loud ticking noise . I always have associated it as a lifter leaking down . when for what ever reason . the engine stops on that one . I have had it tick for as long as fifteen minutes before it pumps back up , sitting in drive way . also have drove around block to try and get it to stop . sounds like a rod going to come through block , less annoying sitting in drive way . also I only run 30W oil . let us know if it goes away

Yeah... It's totally random...I should have mentioned that.

I got the tick too. Took valve covers off and found one rocker arm not rocking too much. Plan to take intake off and check out entire valve train.

Is that blow by coming out of the breather cap? Definitely sounds like lifter to me.

will do, but I'm off the jeep now for a while. working boat project and some home projects with more priority.

What I saw with valve cover off was that the push rod was not pushing up on rocker arm the correct distance. So, broken lifter, bent rod , cam lobe worn down or some combination of all..

Probably. It was a cold start, not at operating temperature.

Mine ticks like that once or twice a month before the engine warms, it usually clears in a mile or two. I know one of my lifters is weak, it takes a while to pump up.

My guess is upper end, cyl 3 exhaust valve.

Well, i could yell you that if it was here and not where you are;)

Use the screwdriver to the ear to see if you can isolate it. See where its the loudest.

I've seen my dad do that, but I've never been very good at it.

    Thanks for the ideas guys.

The old 225 does not run very high oil pressure, and an older engine with some miles often develops ticking lifters. Dirty oil is sometimes the culprit, or sometimes a worn cam (which this whole family of engines is known for).
Change the oil and drive 20 or more miles at highway speeds. This may clear up the sticking/partially collapsed lifter. Do you have an oil pressure gauge to monitor hot pressure at road speed?
Also, check to see how clean the oil is after this run, It should be nearly as clean as it was when you changed it. If it is already getting dark, you may have a tired engine that should be freshened up sometime in the near future.

I drove the Jeep to work today...No tick after a mile or so. No tick whatsoever on the way home.
