One Last Electrical Problem

I have ALL my lights working correctly except one circuit. Like many others my 68 cj5 V6 front running lights go out when the headlights are turned on. When this happens the directionals on the front work great, hazard flashers work and back directionals work also. When the running lights are on without headlights the front directional lights won't blink and hazard won't blink, the front running lights just stay on. The back directionals and hazard will blink.

I did receive my FSM today but could not get any help with this specific problem. Web search and forum search did not lead to anything on this specific problem.

    Any thoughts????

    Thanks!!

I have the wrong bulb in front. I put 1157 in and it should be 1158. FSM listed these, I got the book today and it has paid off already. 1158's should fix it,
    Yee Haw. Thanks

Curious, because I just put in 1157 in my 66 cj left parking and all seems fine. My FSM indeed states 1158, but a Google check on crossover bulb types shows 1158 subs for 1157, and vice versa. In any case, we're both with lights.

My bigger issue was getting the 50 year old bulb out. I had to mush it with a needle nose, destroying it to where I could not read the original number beyond what looked like 103. I don't remember ever having to replace a parking light, so the one I pulled out must be the original.

Where are you guys seeing an 1158 being listed? An 1158 should be 6V.

You are correct, my error again should be 1157 for later models and 1158 for early models. Crap!!!! that still leaves me with this:

I'm assuming your key is in the "On" position? Turn on your parking lights and blinker. Wiggle the bulb in question and see if it starts to work?

Try cleaning up the socket and mount could be a bad ground.

Focker, Do you know a source for a colored wiring diagram for a 68 cj5 v56? My fsm is black and white.
    Thanks!!

The lights works and blink but will not work when the running lights are on without headlights the front directional lights won't blink and hazard won't blink, the front running lights just stay on. The back directionals and hazard will blink.

The usual reason for lights working/not working when other lights are off/on is a bad ground, check how your running lights are mounted into the grill & make sure there's a good bare metal to bare metal contact between the lamp housing & the grill.

The way these are wired...You're high beam switch could be part of the issue too.

I'll look for a colored diagram.

ok will clean up the the connection from grill surface to light mounting screws, but they have a good enough ground to work otherwise. They do not blink when they are on without headlights on?

    I agree. :D

But, hey... If it's supposed to work... Let's get it to work right.

Did you try wiggling the front bulbs? I know they work in other settings, but just try it.

What we're getting at is... The grounds are picky and can cause intermittent problems. Wiggle the bulbs, sockets and housings. If it starts to work... It's a dirt or ground thing.

Thanks, I think I can use it in this case, but also want to enlarge it for future use. Thinking about 'freshening' my wiring using my existing harness.

I could go into considerable detail on how un-grounded feed-back can make lights work in one situation and not in another. It's easier to take our word for it and check for proper bulb in proper socket and proper orientation into socket and making sure the light housing itself is grounded good to the grille and the grille is properly grounded to the fender and frame. If the light assy is showing lots of rust then make sure the socket that holds the bulb is properly grounded to it's mounting housing.

This afternoon I took the light asms off the grill. I cleaned the around the screw holes inside to bright metal, I cleaned the threads on the asm screws and sanded the back side of the nuts to assure a good connection to ground. I also worked on the bulb holder making sure it moved aginst the spring and the bulb was in correctly and being held tight in the holder. I re assembled with no improvement. I wiggled the bulbs and tested it on both hi beams and low beams, no improvement.
I did not check the grill being grounded to the body and frame, will do that tomorrow.
Will check this also: If the light assy is showing lots of rust then make sure the socket that holds the bulb is properly grounded to it's mounting housing.[/QUOTE]

Thanks for all the advice, I appreciate it.

Be sure you have the light wired correctly. 1157 is dual element so the blinker is connected to the bright element and the park light on the dim one. If you have the park wire fastened to the turn signal element you will not see the dim element flashing.
