So hooked up my new speedo to my military t18.

The needle just jumps back and forth from 0-10..

I hooked up a cordless drill to the cable to test the speedo, it works fine.. so problem must be in the t18

Could it just be as simple as a new speedo gear?

    is it a simple job?

If the cable is failing or lacking lube this will happen. Pull it out and try greasing it.

Or if the inner core is slightly too long and binding. See if loosening the top nut slightly changes anything.

I had an issue similar to what Pete mentioned about binding.

    This,

I just undid the cable at the back of the speedometer and re-greased the cable as it went back in. It fixed my jumping speedo problem.

I think we talked about this problem a few years ago and the cause was too long speedo cable, the inner part. The cure was to cut about 1/8 " off of one end.

I havent had the chance to look at it again.. I will grease it up some, but it would be surprising to me that would be it, because it works on the cordless drill fine..

The length issue would only manifest when the cable nuts are screwed in tight.

I pretty much did the same fix with one of mine. Took me a bit to figure out what the issue was.

I ran into this with wimpy when i had the civi d18 and military speedo. Figured it was just a hair too long.
Same thing. Would be smooth if i left the nut a little loose but bounced if i tightened the nut all the way down

I mentioned this to a friend that replaced the csble on his '76 CJ5. The speedo didn't work. He cut an eighth of an inch off the inner cable. It worked better, cut another 1/8 off and it works fine.

Well, the nut at the speedometer was pretty loose already.. should i try at the TC?

OK so finally got around to trying it out. Removed the cable and greased it. Cut 1/8" or so of the square end at the cluster side. Also was sure not to over tighten the nuts.

Now it blips up to a higher speed on the cluster, and a bit faster..

Before it was going from 0-20-0-20-0.. Now it's 0-30-0-30-0...

Am I getting closer out further away from a fix?
