Under Seat Toolbox

What can I do to keep rainwater off of my tools in this box?

 

make sure there are drain holes in the bottom. If water collects you can put a plastic grate in the bottom to keep the tools out of the water.

 

Hi Glenn, yes it has a top. Water still gets into the box soaking my tow strap and rusting my jack & tire wrench.

 

Which Jeep? When they did the 3A, they put a channel under the lid with a drain tube to the rear wheel area. I believe CJ5s had the same channel and drain. If the water is seeping in from the floor through the spot welds, you are sort of screwed. I don't think I have ever seen a good solution other than keeping the water out of the body.

 

Don't put anything in there that moisture will hurt. Or use a waterproof storage container inside the toolbox.

 

Humidity will cause rust on tools even though no water gets in, especially when it sets up
for a length of time. I quit using mine for that reason..

 

I'm looking into a plastic bin that will fit, but also hold the desired tools. A desiccant pack to keep the humidity at bay. Failing that, an old school oil-soaked rag to wrap the tools.

Not much luck so far. Still using the maple box my uncle made that serves a dual purpose: fits under the seat and holds the jack/handle and also makes a great step stool for the ladies.

My 3B has a gas tank there now. The tools go in a big (I mean BIG) plastic box in the back and I use a hard top.

 

What he said..........the rail has a drain to the rear and the lid has a rubber gasket..........never had mine leak.

 

Seam Seal the inside of the box with this. I used clear Seam Sealer.

the toolbox is just spot welded to the floor and unless you seal along floor edge all the way around it, it wont keep much water out. I would probably make a drain hole and plug it with a rubber plug inside the tool box and seal the seams and just keep debris out of the channel along the top of the box at the lid and you should be fine.

my 48 had a rusted toolbox and floors so when I replaced the floor I chose to leave the toolbox out and just make a seat bracket and throw my stuff under the seat without the factory toolbox. in the future I might add a second gas tank under there but I doubt it since I rarely need it.

 

Its more than likely a seam in the front of the wheel well. to find it go out at night in the dark, take a flash light an shine it under the seat pointing it where it inner fender well meats the floor pan. you'll see light coming out in the not good seam that's in front of the tire..its a problem with lots of them...
