Today i was driving my 1964 Jeep CJ5 when I felt my clutch pedal release to the floor and couldn't get it into any gear. While at home, I immediately checked the clutch cable and found it loose throughout the whole area. I followed the cable and noticed the cable enters the bell housing which I didn't know.

Now, how do I change the clutch cable. Please help.....

Well, I think I will pay someone to do it sounds like there is too much. I'm more like a novice on my Jeep, looks like onto a professional...

Well, as I was driving I could feel something wasn't right in the clutch and then snap clutch hit the floor and wouldn't move. I couldn't shift but was able to drive home in first gear. I looked underneath just below the clutch assembly then followed up to the bell housing. I didn't see anything out of the ordinary. Based on my experience with other autos it's always turned out to be clutch cable. As I followed though I felt that the clutch cable had a lot of play in it. As I finished my observation I saw the cable entered the bell housing.

Now reading in the forms, I noticed that the transmission and bell housing needs to be removed.. can you correct me in the proper disassembly and installation of the cable.

    Hopefully I gave more information.

    Thanks Tim

The cable does not go inside the bell housing on these old JEEPs. Not in stock form anyway. It should attach to the clutch fork, which protrudes from the bell housing.

    Check this out. Might help.

On older Jeeps the clutch cable enters the bell housing and the clutch fork is inside the bell. There is an inspection cover on the top of the bell that can be removed for access to the fork. PITA to reconnect it. but it can usually be done.

I don't know when that was changed, but it is how it works on a cj2a

My '60 has the connection at the end of an arm that comes out through the side of the bell housing. There is a little cup affair to catch that ball on the end of the cable.

Huh, this is the second time I've heard of the end of the cable ending up in the bell houseing in the last month. The other mention was on the 2A or 3B pages I think. If it was me I would start with one of those telescoping magnet things to see if you can fish it out unless it is somehow jammed into the clutch or something. Otherwise your only other choice is to seperate the motor and bellhousing so you can get in there.

To check your clutch you can take the trans cover out of the jeep and remove the inspection plate on the bell housing and look inside the bell housing and see what is going on. Rick

Looks like the support bracket broke. Any ideas for a replacement. Thanks for your help..

Curious what engine/trans is in our '64. Sounds like it was transplanted from an earlier model perhaps.

Might want to post a wtb add in the classifieds. Someone might have one laying around. Whalks or any of the jeep parts companies should have one. Might be a couple different sizes??

they sell those. They typically get flat on the back side and make the clutch not work so good.

What do you guys think of the roller chain clutch linkages?
