Buick v6 in 1964 CJ5.

    I have a 1964 CJ5 with a 1976 Buick v6 installed. I bought it as a barn find, it hasn't run in 8 years. I got it to start right up but I can't push the clutch pedal in, it seems frozen. It does have an adapter to mate to a T90 transmission. I'm wondering if it is frozen or screwed up. I need to know if anyone has done this swap before and what parts should I use. It does seem to have a homemade crossbar linkage. I believe it needs a different cross shaft and throwout arm what else do you think I need. This is a nailhead v6 and does have the original v6 bellhousing.

    Lots of folks have done that install (I did it multiple times). Novak Knowledge base is a good place to read about it. With minor differences in the adapters, it's pretty much the same process and parts.

    Check the linkage. May be frozen/rusted in place. As an FYI, a '76 231 is not a nailhead engine.

    I can't for some reason post pictures but it is an oddfire motor. It has a Rochester 2 bbl carb and an egr valve.

    I can't tell the year I was told it was a nailhead but I have no way of finding the year. There is no number pad I can read or casting marks. Did anyone else use this engine besides Buick or Jeep?.

    Olds, Pontiac, and Chevy.
    Doesn't matter, though, because these engines were the same across the GM divisions.

    Not a nailhead. Forget the nailhead thing. The nailhead Buick V8s are from the 50s and early 60s. Whoever told you that does not know what they are talking about.

    Indicative of a '75 and newer 231 but no guarantee. If you look on the back of the block on the top flange where the bellhousing bolts to right behind the intake manifold there will be some casting numbers. Using those numbers the block should be able to be identified.

    Also after running the engine a bit the clutch freed up, but the crossbar and ball ends are junk as is the clutch release cable.

    I can't find that casting number in my book, though it is in the BUICK 231/3.8 family. The closest I come to your number is 1254083 which is the 75-77 Buick 231 oddfire. Some of the 231 heads have the 1249xxx casting numbers.
    The Buick and Jeep 225/3.7 casting numbers are 1381623, 13916314, and 1858435.

    According to Joel Vande Berg it's a 231 ci 75 -76 odd fire.
