The driver window of my windshield has a problem, it is less transparent (it is 2 slices of glass, in the center probably a plastic film which becomes white...) very difficult to find this size in France.
Do you have a solution ?
It is probably difficult to open and change, I'll have to change the 2 parts.

I am waiting for the answer of a cy who cuts glass at the size, including oval. And including this kind of glass, with 3 layers, 2 glass and plastic inside.

It is not probably the best for car but we can see through.

    What is your opinion?

If you can remove at least one side in one piece, any competent glass shop should be able to cut to the same dimensions using auto safety glass (which is what the two glass panes w/ plastic in the middle really is.)

I have to try to, I'll take time to do it, working slowly and carefully. I have no experience in glass business.

Alan, call the glass shops they should be able to take it out for you too.

I took just my windshield to a glass shop with a new seal, they cut the safety glass and installed for me free and just charged for the glass. this wasn't even a automotive windshield glass shop.

jeeps are nice having flat glass :)

Mine was made from a sheet of plexiglass. Was in the Jeep when I bought it. Same stuff as used for Jet airplane canopy.

The glass is called laminated glass here in the US. Here it is available in clear and green tinted. Any glass shop should be able to cut it for you. Wish you were closer I could cut you some.

Plexiglass may not be legal, and scratches easily.

Jet airplanes do not use plexiglass.

Typically Lexan or stronger ballistic acrylics. Plexiglass is very brittle, cracks easily, and if hit with a sharp object tends to shatter into shards creating shrapnel. Not a good choice for jet aircraft ;).
Ever try to cut or drill plexiglass without cracking or shattering it? Can be done but is a real pain.

Here you must have the manufacturers "bug" in the corner so that when you get your jeep inspected they know it's safety glass. Plexiglass scratches very easily and like said would not be safe. Lexan (polycarbonate) would be better but will still scratch and would not pass inspection around here. They make a scratch resistant lexan called Margaurd but it's pricey and wouldn't pass inspection either.

It's the same stuff used for making the wind screens for motorcycles. Holds up very well. Mine has been in place since before 2006, which is when I bought the Jeep.

I am not specialiste in glass, I learn.
Very good to have a flat glass on the Jeep.
I found a cy cutting at the shape, it seems easy to find...and to do.

    This is it : http://msrmiroiterie.com/boutique/product/8

I tried to cut glass myself with adapted tools, but that was not a success.
About plastic, there are some used for transparency, on helmets, protection, I suppose Lexan or other polycarbonats, but on a car I am not sure that they accept it at the controls.

Thanks for all theses infromations, I was really worried about finding a glass at the dimension in France.

yes, true, we used lexan to produce transparent parts. But they use for protection helmets, even against explosive?

I don't believe that I'll get a "bug" on the glass to pass the safety control if I have a glass cut like this.
I have to check, maybe. I suppose it is made by sandprojection. Or maybe it is inside the glass?
    Wait and see.

The inspection won't accept replacement windshields other than OEM replacements? No windshields from glass shops allowed? I've never seen a replacement windshield from a glass shop that has a manufacturer mark on it.

they will most likely only look for the markings is they suspect the windshield is not safety glass. I have gotten safety glass from old delivery vans at the junk yard. UPS trucks and garbage trucks have nice big flat windshields you can even use the seal. But take it to a glass shop to cut it to size. Its more tricky to cut safety glass than single pane. especially the curves. You dont want to use anything other than safety glass for the windshield.

I'll check what are the norms at the safety control. They are changing with more and more controls, but I'll check if they check the safety glass.

You believe that I can get an old flat safety glass with a mark from a van and have it cut at the shape by a pro shop?
    I have to check too...

It would be better if I could find the exact Jeep glass, but I had no success in France until now, and because of risks it seems to me difficult to have this delivered, it can break in the transport.

The only wAy to tell if it is safety glass is the glass manufacturers etching in the glass (bug). It doesn't have to be original jeep glass. Most shops buy laminated in big sheets ie 60x96 and a lot of times they are only etched in one or two corners. A lot of inspection shops will not pass your windshield if they can't find it etched that it is safety glass.

Laminated glass is very common as it is used in heavy machinery and tractors a lot. Your newer equipment is going to glass with curves think $$$$$. Flat jeep windshields are easily cut.

Laminated glass is just two thin layers of glass with a plastic layer in the middle. To cut you have to score and break each side individually. Then you use alcohol to heat the plastic to separate. This takes some skill and practice to get it to come out right.
