What's it for? Transmission shop replaced my D18 with a D20 and this plug is jammed against and denting the floorboard. Should there be a hole in the floorboard for this?

That's the vent. Looks like one from a Dana 18 transfer case. Going from memory I want to say the ones for a Dana 20 was shorter (lower profile) for clearance.

Making sense...sounds like the transmission guy used the plug from the D18 on the D20.....I'm going to see if I can grind it down for clearance.

That is not a plug, it's a vent that threads into the housing and is hollow with a cap that fits loose. I dont see how you could grind it down. Remove it and you'll see what I mean. You could use a reducing bushing and put in a 90 degree fitting with a nipple and run a hose up high as a vent. Or just get the right vent. The threads are NPT threads (pipe threads). R&P and other sources probably have a used one laying around. Or put an ad in the classifieds here.

Got a bunch of those for D20's, if I can find them that is ;). They're about a third as tall. I'll PM you tomorrow.
Maybe not a third, maybe half-
