OK folks, I'm looking for neat ideas on mounting D shackles on, or about, Tonk's front bumper. This is a stock bumper with a ramsey PTO winch.

So go ahead & Impress me with your Improvisations, Blind me with your Brilliance, Astonish me with your Assemblies, Floor me with your Fabrications, Wow me with your Weldments, Persuade me with your Pictures.

  3. I bought a pair of these off ebay probably not from this guy, but these look the same. And I welded them onto the front bumper and installed 2 warn brand screw pin 3/4 inch shackles.... I really like how it looks and works and have never heard them rattle, and I don't even have the Daystar isolators for them. [IMG] [IMG] [IMG] [IMG]

Howard, I am not sure how well set up you are, but if you have a band saw and drill press, the brackets are very easy to make. If not tooled for that, seems I recall there are a number of vendors selling weld-on's.

These are the one's I made out of 1" stock for the rear of the 3B (have hooks with retainer clips on the front). There is a stainless belleville washer on each side to prevent rattling-McMaster-Carr items:

My '5 came to me with tow bar mounts on the front of the bumper. I just used those for my mounts for the D rings.

That's not a bad idea but are lift rings up to being used for winching/recovery? The ramsey is rated at 8000 lbs but will probably do a lot more than that, so with a pulley lets say they need to be good for 5000 lbs. Lift rings probably never had to contend with more than about 750 lbs.

"That's not a bad idea but are lift rings up to being used for winching/recovery?"

    Good question!

I can only guess that they were surely used for recovery pretty often, and the military hardware would be rated fairly high.

Be an interesting thing to field test. Or, I'll bet the military had a specification if someone knows how to locate it.

The mounts go on easy, and could work nicely for a tow bar. I've used them to quick-mount a snowplow.

I made mine from 1/2" by 3" plate. I bolted it to the inside of the frame rails where the A1 had nut inserts already. I welded the winch mount to the plate arms which puts the winch down below the top of the frame rails. I then notched the front bumper to clear the arms. The winch mount is pushed up against the front bumper so the bumper bolts also are used to help reinforce the whole thing.

Tow truck catalogs/websites have all kinds of rated clevises with bolt-on or weld-on pads, etc.

Probably Northern and others too, but I'd be extremely wary of generic chinese stuff. In my business I've broken a lot of the newer off-shore hardware; it is scary.

Pic of the daughter's '70 with same brackets painted with Hammerite. Stock type bumper but I added support plates behind them made out of 3/16" scrap plate I had laying around. I have a towbar that fits these as well.

I'm not sure if it's a good idea or not, but Tractor Supply sells 3-point hitch link ends. Every time I pass by them I think they would make good d-link brackets, but I'm not an engineer or even a particularly knowledgeable wheeler!

Howard, is there a particular reason why you don't just use hooks? I like D-rings but hooks are 1 step simpler, just slip the end of a strap over them.

Don't want to hijack this thread John, but thanks. Black Diamond 3" lift. In pics it has 35 12.5 but turned out to be too much tire. Has 33 10.5 on it now which is perfect. Stock driveline with rear LockRite. Few other custom tricks but mostly wanted a Tonka Toy restoration. I'll post some pics in a thread later today.

Look in Builds and Fabricators Forum.

Nope, I'm also considering hooks as well, but d rings look "Jeepier" :)

whatever you put on there make sure its rated just cause you know the limits of a d ring doesnt mean someone else does :)

I used a factory lift ring in place of a threaded shackle. It got twisted in the strap and straighted out. Last time I ever did that..... Never tried the mount.

[IMG][IMG][IMG]Open hooks work well as was previously mentioned.........welded threaded block attached to each front frame horn.
