64 cj5 grill compatibly.

My radiator in this mostly original as far as I can tell 1964 Cj5 with f134 is not working right. I'm having overheating issues.

I mostly do city driving so I purchased a new 4 row radiator with an electric fan. The new radiator doesn't fit with the fan. The new radiator and electric fan is bumping against the water pump.

My question,
can I use a late model grill on the 64 body to move the radiator forward? How compatible are the different years grills and body's?

Later model as in what? Any ecj5 grill ( up to and including 1971) won't really move the radiator forward although the grills are slightly different having a more symmetrical mounting area for the radiator rather than the sort of offset mounting area of the earlier models. Now, a 72-75 grill pushes the radiator closer to the front of the jeep and I think will bolt up to the fenders. Not sure on the lower mount in the center of the grill. The 72-75 also uses a different radiator so your hoses may not work out right.

One option might be to use a pusher fan that goes in front of the radiator.
Pretty sure there is plenty of room between the grill bars and the front of the core.

As mentioned, the grilles are pretty much all alike until significantly changed for '72.

Is the space from the grill to rad actually shorter or did they only add room for the "new" AMC engines with the frame stretch? Having left my tape measure in my other pants and not having a post '72 anyhow I'm confused.

I believe the radiator moves forward, as well as the frame being stretched.
No pre-72 Jeep here, but I believe the 'tunnel' between the grille bars and the radiator is eliminated.
The radiator is set into the grille, which is about 6" thick in total.
Front surface of the radiator is a few inches from the bars, and the total thickness is no thicker than the grille.
I can measure in the morning if it's not raining.

The front clip was stretched 5".
The radiator was moved forward.
The V8 was not a problem, but the sixes were.
AMC sold a lot of compacts with the sixes.
Important to put the renowned AMC sixes into the CJs and eliminate the antiquated 134.
Highway capable was essential (my interpretation).

They both use a single center bolt, but the bolt location is different.

The 71 and back grill has the bolt behind the grill into a square tube crossframe that is also behind the grill, but in front of the radiator:

The 72 and up have the bolt location out in front of the grill attached to the large flat crossframe that spans the frame rails:

If you want to put the newer grill/radiator setup on an older Jeep, it will require modifying the front crossframe because it and the bottom of the radiator will want to occupy the same space.
