69 dauntless oil bath

I took the oil bath air filter off my 69 Jeepster with a dauntless (assume it is the same setup as a 69 CJ5 with a dauntless) to access the firewall and it felt kind of weird when reassembling the top filter to the base. It didn’t snap in and it sat a little proud on top. Any idea if this is normal? It is the first time I have touched it. Thanks.

Also, is it ok that the vent tube is creased at the valve cover?

I think what you're referring to when you said the top sat a little proud is the gap between the upper and lower portions of the air cleaner housing. That 5/8" or so gap between the two is how outside air gets into the oil bath filter, and from there into the carburetor.

The PCV tube being crimped/creased could limit, or even eliminate filtered air from being drawn through it into the crankcase (then out through the PCV valve and into the base of the carburetor). Depending on to what degree the air flow through that tube is choked off, this could cause your PCV system to either not function as well as it should, or possibly not work at all.

Thank you. That is what I thought, but I wasn’t attentive when I disassembled it.
 
looks perfectly normal....well the creased breather tube is not....but not a big deal....Most of us that still run an oil bath use a generic valve cover filtered breather that is not connected to the oil bath, and then just plug the breather tube on the oil bath.

I was thinking about putting a radiator spring in it. Good or bad idea? What is the advantage of the generic filtered breather and plugging the breather tube? Is it normal for the tube below the breather tube to be open/not connected to anything?

That might work....the set-up is part of the pcv system. If the crankcase builds too much pressure, it ventilates/releases pressure through the pcv valve - which is connected via a small hose to the back of the carb so it can burn off oil and what not. If the crankcase needs air, it pull it in through the hose and breather you are working with. In theory, its pulling air that has been filtered.....if the breather has a filter (not just a screen), then it can pull that air directly from 'outside', and not necessarily through the air filter. Most of our jeeps have long since lost the OEM style breather (with just had a screen) with proper hose connection nipple to fit well with the air filter housing nipple. I think its just easier to run a separate filtered breather (a couple bucks at FLAPS) and replace reasonably often, than it is to try and figure out a solution for the hose and nipple etc.....
 
Is that the correct valve cover hose adapter? The hose nipple on mine comes straight out as opposed to being angled.

The correct style with the hose nipple straight out the top is not common....the OP has one like this:

Next questions:
1. Air pump outlet pipe: I don’t have the emissions system. I have read about plugging it but most pictures have it open. Which is correct?

2. Air pump outlet pipe: Mine was pointing to the drivers side. Is this correct?

3. Gasket between oil cup and filter cover: it looks like this doesn’t exist. I’m planning to cut one from cork or nitrile rubber. Sound correct?

4. I found a broken plastic ring inside the air cleaner. It looks like it came from the inner lip of the oil cup. I don’t see a purpose and haven’t found a replacement. Any ideas?

Edit: This is in a 69 Jeepster, so that may change some parts of the answers.

I’m answering if you’re not to concerned about being 100% correct.

You can turn the oil bath to hide the emissions tube (I would plug it with a rubber snub) towards the firewall, and reposition the Dauntless decal. Since you’re not going to have emissions hooked up.

Have you thought about converting the oil bath to use a paper element? Maury has an amazing thread he wrote about doing this. So much cleaner, and retains the factory oil bath look 100%!

I may be wrong, but I’ve never seen a gasket for the lid to seal to the oil bath canister, only from the carb horn to the bottom of the oil bath canister.
