Wide track Dana 30

Has anyone installed a wide track D30 in an early CJ? Pros/cons?
This is for my 70 CJ5, has Saginaw steering but currently still running the D27 up front.

I'm not 100% sure but, the dana 30 with disq brake seem to be the widetrack version of the dana 30 use on a CJ.
You may want to check the wms of you're current axle and the dana 30 to make sure it's the same.

Thanks. And yes that's exactly it, a wider stance is what I'm after. May eventually get rims with a bit more back spacing to pull em in a little but I'm all for a wider stance.

Aren't the spring perches in a different location, or no?
If so, it's a bit more complicated.
 
Depending on your preference and what you find most of the wide track axles came with weaker 5-bolt lockouts.

I think for the same reasons AMC did it. Better stability and (presumably) better turning circle.
I found both for sale. I'm going to buy the NT but I was thinking about it last night and wondering about the WT axle. If I have to move the spring perches I probably wouldn't mess with it. If it will bolt in the same spot as my current axle it might be of interest.

Also note that a "narrow track" D30 is about 3 inches wider than a D27 and gains you significant steering angle.

This is the BIG ONE!!! (y)
You can change the 5 bolt hubs over to 6 bolt. I did just that with my '82 NT D30 swap. Look for '79ish parts.

Thread 'Salvage yard dana 30 questions'

Long term project, I'm piecing together a 67 cj with a t18, flanged 44 and v6 and large hole d18 transfer case. I have everything except the dana 30 to replace the 27 which i found today at the junk yard. He wants $350 and it has the disk brakes included. He's basically pulling it off an 82 cj5 Laredo complete.

The problem is the rear flanged 44 is 3.73 and the 30 is 3.31 gear ratios. On a budget I'm thinking I just regear the front.

Questions

How much does this typically cost?

Are there any other surprises if I buy this axle that I'm not aware of?

Any other items worth picking...

This. We used to build a LOT of 44 fronts to widetrack 30 specs for customers. They typically wanted the tighter turning radius and more stability.
 
It's no different than swapping in a narrow track in terms of the procedure. The spring perch locations are the same distance apart as a narrow track.
