Hello all
I have a 65 cj5 looking for a cool way to mount my spare tire was wondering if anybody had any good ideas I have original mount for the side just don’t think I wanna put my spare tire on the side and I still wanna be able to use my tailgate any cost-effective ideas?

It's not for everyone, but inside is an option:

The eternal debate but what it all comes down to is how you plan to use the Jeep. If any trails other than graded gravel are in the mix, the factory side mount is/was a terrible idea. All sorts of ways to rear mount it and most are posted here if you do a search. Swing out/swing down. You may even still find the aftermarket Kayline carrier which is a pretty nice unit.

Mine is mounted to a factory side mount bracket which is welded to a tow bar which is bolted to the draw bar.

I wouldn't mind Pictures.

My spare doesn't have a mount. I throw it in the trailer when i take it out of town. I know the 8 plys on the jeep are functionally run flats. BTDT. The m416 has NDT tires from before I got it. I would like to build a rear mounted swinging tire carrier but since I flat tow, this seems like it would work for me. 80% of the time they are leaning against the wall anyway.

This build is pretty similar to what a lot of us use as a swing out spare tire carrier built on a rear bumper with recovery points....

When I made my corner guards, I added a couple heim joints for the tire carrier. There’s a simple latch that ties into the tailgate… and it rattles all the time.

There are countless ways of making hinges and figuring latches. I took inspiration from the later model CJ factory tire carriers.
