Remote oil filter location

I ran a remote filter with the 4.3 until I did the saginaw swap. Ripped a line off one day on a trail ride. I'm pretty sure @fourtrail rolled in to the trail at pottawatomi as I was getting it sorted out.

The initial reason I installed a remote filter on my 225 is the common clearance problem with the lower radiator hose which only allows for the smallest filter size. I wanted a larger filter. Also figured a little more oil capacity and getting the oil away from the motor may slightly help with cooling. Later found that filter changes are easier too.

The 231 oil filter housing angles different from the 225 ( which was angled for diff clearance. With soft suspension you can bash the filter off a 231 damhik)
I ended up mounting the filter housing off a homemade bracket from the passenger forward head bolts. I constantly wore through hoses at the fitting when it was mounted to the grill support due to vibration.

I used hydraulic hose with a sheath over it to combat the chaffing. the hose that came with the remote housing was crappy .

My TDI has it mounted on the inner fender. The firewall is another good place.
The stock 225 oil filter housing angles the filter in a “safe” direction where it won’t get bashed by the front axle. Engine swaps sometimes put the filter in harm’s way, so a remote relocation is needed. I wouldn’t recommend going remote unless you have a need to. These hoses are a potential source of leaks and they can be snagged by branches and debris.
