Ha! I know I paid too much for my current project Jeep, and I've paid too buying stuff to improve it.
But that's the way it's supposed to be. It's a hobby. If you made money at it, it would be a job and no longer fun.

Had GeoffreyL over today to try and doctor the postal jeep up to make it last a little bit longer prior to its inevitable death.
We did an oil change with 20w50 oil and threw some pro lube in it. It definitely made the valve tap quieter and the rod knock disappeared.
We the discovered a fuel leak from the fuel filter and replaced the fuel filter.
Once the filter was replaced it started to really bog down and idle strangely. It turns out the carb is bad and the float is getting stuck. We freed the carb up and it ran normally again. We took it on a test drive and discovered that the rod knock is caused by a faulty carburetor. The float gets stuck and dumps fuel into the engine and it runs rich.
We took the carb off and I am going to get it rebuilt.

Oil was pretty thinned out after less than a week. Stunk of raw gas. Probably still not the most healthy engine, but trying to buy it a few months since I don’t have time to help swap it until July. Only seems to knock when the float gets stuck open, I’m sure once it dumps enough fuel and dilutes the oil again it will go back to knocking all the time. I offered up the driveline in my 74, which has needed to die for a long time (bad body, frame, and no title). That would give us everything to have a healthy runner and 4x4!
