I put Ol Yeller under the carport for a while so that I could get my jeep ready for the Rubicon.
There were some lingering engine running issues making me crazy that I attributed to a fuel supply issue.
We suspected a rusty tank was not helping the situation so Rich had a tank and sending unit delivered.
Rich is either learning that I am an expensive friend.... or he is just afraid I wont let him go on the Rubicon trip if his jeep is not 100% up to my standards......
Maybe its both....
Draining the brand new fuel filter.......
No, that's not bbq sauce.....
That's the fuel in the filter after jumping the fuel pump relay and pumping 15 gallons of fuel out of the tank into jugs.
Time to trash that fuel tank and move forward with something workable.
Check out this Omix slop.....
This is the supplied fuel strainer and sending unit tube.
8mm (.314 outside diameter) sending unit tube and a strainer with a .385 inside diameter.
These two items came packaged in the same sealed bag......
I'm not a lawsuit kinda guy..... but I would totally sign on for a class action against Omix for making so many blatantly junk/ill fitting jeep parts.
In addition to the strainer never going to work..... the sending unit is not long enough to access all of the fuel in the tank.
The sending unit protruded 7-1/2" into a tank that it 9-5/8" deep.
Even with the factory strainer, there is no way you can pull close to the full 15 gallons out of the tank.
The solution for the fuel pickup:
A piece of 5/16" tube will slide snugly over the sending unit pickup tube. The tube is bent 45 degrees to put the pickup flat to the tank floor.
The submersible fuel hose seals the connection and holds the lower pickup tube in place.
The strainer is a fuel pump sock with the end cut off. There is a piece inside of the sock that prevents it from sucking flat and collapsing.
Fuel pump sock from Napa.
A measure/trial and error fit until the fuel pickup is just barley off the bottom of the tank.
I have used this same type of setup in my tank for nearly 10 years not.
This should get all but maybe the last 1/2 gallon of fuel out of the tank.
It is hard to see in the pic, but I used my inspection camera to look inside the tank and verify fuel pickup location.
