1970 Restomod Build

Last 4 days of heavy mist and fog here so not much headway on the carburetor adjustments. Taking the time to organize and refine the Rubicon packing list. Have the basics covered just keep adding more just in case items. I am sure there will be many more items to add.

I lost most of the between seat storage space with the emergency brake handle and fuel switch valve. To add a bit more space for small items. I found a sunglass and registration holder for the roll bar and a small pouch that went behind the grab bar on Amazon.

Added this sunscreen to the roll bar for when the windshield is down. Another Amazon find. This is for a JK. Fits well on 3 of the 4 sides. Need some sun here to try it out.

Added a AFR gauge. Made the first round of jet and power valve changes. AFR's are much better. Still need some work in the squirter/accelerator pump area to eliminate the bog.

Still working on learning and tinkering with the Holley carb. Every gain I make has some side effect that I need to learn about and solve. If I am not happy with it in a couple of weeks I will go back to the 2G for the Rubicon trip.

Purchased a SetPower 45DT refrigerator for the trip. Add the extra battery and cover as well. Still need to order a solar panel and a thermal blanket for the top. Used to have a good system with dry ice and two coolers. but I lost access to free dry ice when I retired. Hopefully this setup will be better.

Added a 12v socket and USB charger port on the drivers side for the fridge.

Added floor mats. Went over the Jeep again and moved some wires and hoses to better positions.

Continued to work on jetting off and on this week. Felt it was good enough to try some miles. Took a drive out the lost coast and into the redwoods. It is a 100 mile loop.

Jeep did ok. A stock one would outrun it. Going to back to basics and start diagnostics to check for other issues. Not where I want to be this close to the Rubicon trip.

Last year at this time I was struggling with a bad engine and didn't make the Rubicon trip. This year I am fighting jetting issues. It runs ok but I am not happy where it's at. I currently lack the time and the talent to dial in the 4 barrel. Plan B was going back to the 2G carb. After seeing Woodstock going with a Holley system I rolled the dice and installed a 2300 Sniper system.

The system needs a 3/8 feed and a 3/8 return fuel line. Both tanks came out for the upgrade.

Installation was straight forward. Followed the instructions and made good electrical connections. Used the GM crank trigger set as Norcal outlined in his build. Touched the key and it started right up. Runs smooth through the gears. It needs work on cold idle and lean pop that I hope to have tuned out by trip time. At least in its current configuration I have faith that it will make it through the trip. Bought spare filters and a fuel pump. Last item on the list is to change the muffler again. It is horrendously loud and megaphones out the back. Earplugs almost aren't enough. Back to more test miles. Wish me luck!

This round of testing started out rough. Volt gauge was jumping around and it was causing the engine to miss. Ordered and installed a new 150 amp alternator and a new battery just in case. Went on another test drive and the voltage gauge was still having issues but the Holley display was reading full voltage. Managed to limp it to the driveway before it died. Pushed it into the garage and found constant power at full voltage and keyed power at 4 volts. Replaced the ignition switch and it fixed the issues. Ordered another switch for the tool box.

The bad switch was a large part of the running issues. Jeep did great in the local test loop for the first time ever. With that success we moved to the river bar for off road testing. Not a lot of obstacles but enough to get a feel for it. Fuel injection is nice. Put it straight up or down and it just runs. Restarts are no issue at any angle. Jeep feels sorted and balanced for the first time ever. Goes in Monday for the new muffler. After seeing Norcals / Old Yellers post on the fuel sender I will pull the tank and make the modifications to correct that issue. Finally have a good feeling about it being successful on the Rubicon trip. Plus I will never hear the end of it if my son has to tow me through the trail with the green Jeep.

Glad to hear everything is falling into place.
