1975 Brutally Simple Daily Driver

Fins N Things was just as expected as it always is. I like this trail at the end of the day because the obstacles are as challenging as you want them to be due to the bypasses and there’s multiple exit points if you want to duck out early. We showed up just after the Jeep concept vehicle presentation was getting done so we saw them all leaving the entrance as we went in. Very cool!

By Wednesday my clutch knee was just about shot. It was a drizzly day off and on so I took the opportunity to just wander around town. In the morning, it just about felt like I had the whole town to myself! The afternoon was spent doing some parking lot things getting the CJ in trailer mode. Yup… I chickened out on the return leg back home. This allowed me to go back through Vail pass to the twisty mountain roads and enjoy the scenery without having my foot to the floor the entire time.

The drive home felt like it was done in record time compared to getting there! After dropping off the U-Haul I took a quick damage report.

I honestly don’t remember banging around on the transmission crossmember enough to twist it around as much as I did, but I recall exactly when I could’ve sworn I took out my rear driveshaft. Close call there! There’s a few good scratches on the rock sliders and I couldn’t seen to keep the rear leaf spring shackles off the rocks. I’ve got a list of things needing attention.

Good job, little buddy.
Thanks for all the pictures and commentary! Nice trip. I wish I was that close to Moab.

Neohic, your picture of the rear differential is the reason I am considering building differential skids to protect the covers and u-joints, especially for the Rubicon in June.

Fins and Things is usually our first trail to get me wife back into the rock crawling mindset. Since I generally wheel alone, I haven’t done Kane Creek in years, as I want another rig with me.

Nice pictures

Partial clean up day. I brought it to the car wash, took a cleanup cut and respooled the winch cable, put the rear driveshaft back in, and I fixed the bikini top. A couple of the hook and loop straps pulled through the canvas from hanging in there from highway speeds. It was only the middle two but I reinforced all four rear straps with marine vinyl.

I need to make a plan for a new rain cover soon.

With springtime trying really hard to come around, I wanted to address the old rain cover. About this time last year we got some gnarly hail and it trashed the old cover. It was kept around because it was better than nothing. The new top is made of a thinner material, but it is waterproof.

I made it inside out so the seams would be easier to work with. Reinforcement patches where the straps would go were added along with some marine vinyl where there could be a wear spot. After final sewing it fit great!

In the future, I’ll try and keep an eye on any heavier weather and park it under my carport if need be. We’ll see how it lasts. Hopefully the thinner material holds up.

Holy cow that is nice!

That is quality work! I just bought a cover for a JK 4-door for the 47 since it’s longer than a stock cj2a. I wanted something for the Rubicon trip in case we get weather. Hmmm, maybe I should test fit the cover on the Jeep…

The CJ finally got un-Moabed today. I pumped out the remainder of the fuel in the long range auxiliary tank and removed it. There was a bunch of last minute wiring that needed to get cleaned up and I never added an override switch for the fan… that I later did in a parking lot. This means that a new hole got drilled in the dash!

The turkey pan heat shield got retired today also. I got a couple rolls of heat shield tin foil kind of stuff and went to town on nearly all of the exhaust under the tub. Hopefully that put a pin in the overheating fuel pump.

Fingers crossed for no rattles! We’re getting into our heavy snow season also. I’m not interested in seeing how the new top holds up to wet, heavy snow that we’re supposed to get this week so it’s hiding out under the carport.

Planning ahead for the next big project, YJ springs have been ordered. I decided to go with Zone Offroad 2” lift springs because they’re under the Fox/BDS umbrella. They offer a kit that doesn’t include shocks that’s very affordable! I’m hoping they don’t suck. For shocks, I’ve got two new Bilstein 5100s for a 3” lift rear TJ application already but they’re the same shock as a 3” YJ only with a bar pin in the upper bushing that’ll get taken out. The front will be matching 5100s for a 3” YJ. I’m not in a huge hurry to tear apart the whole suspension right now so I’m just collecting parts. Stay tuned for that!

What about moving the fuel pump to the passenger side frame rail?
The frame rail location works just fine for pulling from a rear tank, protects the fuel pump from flying debris and would be farther from your exhaust?

You’re absolutely right. I’ve got another 6” I could move it over.

I also am about to embark on installing YJ springs on my 74. I have hopefully got everything I need, as I ordered all the parts individually from separate suppliers. When you begin I would appreciate a post up of as many details of your parts and install as you can. When I begin my install I will post up as well. Norcal69 has a good write up on yj spring install on his common common sense build page.

Small update on the rain cover. I like when everything has a place when not being used so I made a small cinch bag for it.

The bag is about 14” long when it has the top crammed in it. Fits under the seat next to the gear bags nicely also. The top itself got an additional strap on the rear corners after I noticed it riding up and collecting water after the rain we’ve been getting.
