Yj Spring Swap

Part of my project plan is a spring swap/update. I plan on using BDS YJ springs due to military wrap and no questions asked warranty. I had thought about the Old Man Emu springs but bds beats them in my book. With that being said. Has anybody used their 3.5 inch springs? If so how tall of tire are you clearing? I have been told that XYZ inch lift YJ springs with net XYZ plus a bit more when swapping to a CJ. I plan on standards up front and the heavier duty models in the rear. Im not dead set on the 3.5s but Im thinking thats what I need to do to clear 35s

 

I have a '70 cj5 with a cj3A body. Installed 3.5" lift YJ springs (and YJ spring hangers that gained another 1" or so) and also have a 1" body lift, clears 35" tires plenty. The front fenders are different but I think the rear would be the same as a cj5. Considered trying stock YJ springs but glad I did not.

 

Good to know. Did you use BDS springs? I dont plan on a body lift unless needed to prevent rubbing after its all put back together.

 

They were not BDS, I think E-bay, don't remember.

 

save you bds receipt.... I killed mine in about 1 1/2 yrs ....and that's not really that many times out ,,,they do ride great super soft and quiet ... but didn't hold up to my 6. I run 3 1/2" cj7 springs .I now run a frankenpack of BDS and Soft ride and they get along great .

 

Was it fronts or rears or both that gave up the ghost? They have a heavy duty option for the rear that seems like a good idea.

I know you were looking at 3.5", I am running 5" BDS and only have a 1" body lift and clear the 35" swampers very well. I used the Rocky Road kit to put them in and it works great. Rears were actually a little too tall and had to take a bit of the arch out. Look at my avatar and you cab see what it looks like.

 

Are those 35s? How do you like the ome springs? Any rubbing?

 

I just installed 1" Superlift yj springs using Barnes4WD hangers and I fit 35s. I did trim the rear openings but I'm not sure I needed as much as I did.

 

They are 33X12'5X15's. They do rub the front springs only on sharp turns. I really like the Old Man Emu springs. They're really soft and have a really good ride off road.
