    All,

If we can beat this one some more... :dead horse:

I'm looking at a 'complete' setup from a YJ to put on my CJ5 (v6 225).

    Parts have:
Power Steering Box w/ Pitman arm
    Power Steering Pump (serpentine pulley)
Power steering Shaft - connected to the pump, includes the universal end as well.
    Power Steering Reservoir
Power Steering Lines (complete, but I'll get new ones made after its all mounted)

So, the pump has a serpentine belt pully, I'm thinking I can pull that and replace with the v-pulley from my smog pump. I can potentially use the mount bracket as a base from the smog pump for mounting the ps pump.

I'm sure there are a few 'other' things to consider (said aloud for your needed advice)...

I'd like to keep my original steering wheel, housing and shaft.

I'm guessing I can lop the screw end off the current shaft which mates in the ross box.

    I'm thinking I need some sort of bracket / bearing near where the ross box was to terminate the steering wheel shaft;

Need a thought or two on how to mate the shaft to either another universal or some sort of sturdy bracket. I see pinned, bolted, welded, glued, bailing wired, bubblegum and other options, but what's reasonable?

I see so many 'good' configurations in these pages here-in where to start? (front bumper and work backward, steering wheel and work forward?)

Parts of this I'll put together while I'm down to bare frame, but I think some have to happen after I mount the tub.

Putting my mind around this mess I've created in the garage... the shed ... the other shed ... the side yard ...

thanks for your ruminations and as always, your patience.

    D

You can use your original column , but if you ever dreamed of a tilt column now is the time!.........back to your original column: Since your going with a Power steering box you can now cannibalize your old column.........you'll have to take the old Ross gear box apart and release the hollow tube and cut off your inner shaft to get it out......But, before you cut there may be some value in that old gear box so if you can find a suitable splined replacement shaft you may want to save the old gear box and shaft. Take the steering wheel off and pay close attention to the parts at the steering wheel end as the column comes apart as there is a non caged ball bearing and a race at the upper end which you need to save those parts & ball bearings. The column tube and the inner shaft will both need to be shortened later once you establish the correct length coming through the floor. At the new hollow tube column end at the base a bearing or bushing must be made or purchased to hold the inner shaft inside the now shortened column.............I believe that inner shaft is either 3/4" or 13/16" which once the correct length is established a universal joint will be attached there. To hold the column to the floor a plate is normally made that attaches to the floor and holds the base of the column..........the mounting of the new steering gear and its steering shaft to the column should be planned out carefully as this will tell you where the steering column u-joint needs to finish that comes out of the floor......Obviously your power steering pump may be in the way as may the headers..........take the whole process slowly and measure twice before you cut or weld anything....sounds complicated but it really is not. Hope this helps!

Me too. I was thinking of using XJ stuff, rather than YJ. Are the steering boxes the same in any or all respects?
