I have some rust damage on the flange the windshield gasket rides on. I can't see this sealing very well so I am going to fix it.

I'd like to hear from anyone who has done this before about how to do it and how much you can get away with just smoothing out.

I've made a hillbilly repair panel. I figure I should go down into the box at the bottom and drill out a couple spotwelds to make the repair strong and hopefully waterproof.

For the part that holds the glass gasket here's what I did. Mine was not as bad as yours. I laid a strip of wax paper on a strip of plywood to hold the back side even then mixed some JB Weld and applied. Wire wheeled to bare metal first. No leaks from my repair. YMMV

Yeah, I think I'll do that for the places that are still strong bu have some holes. I welded up the really bad spots. I think it'll work. Thanks!

Another vote of confidence for the JB Weld as-body-patch. I went out and bought some finally. First time JB Weld owner. [IMG]

Got any pics of your repair, Walt?

No I figured it was so insignificant at the time that I didn't bother. Wish I had now. Sorry..

I imagine the repair is flawless anyway and so a photo would be meaningless unless you had 'before and after' documentation.

What I will ask is how is the repair holding up? How well does JB-W hold up over time and do temperature cycling extremes affect it at all (very hot to very cold, dry to humid)??

I have a JB weld repair on my Sthil 044 saw case. Poked a quarter size hole in the oil tank when it grabbed a stick and rammed my shins and the case front.
It cycles cold to hot when running. Holds back oil and is durable. It handles vibrations. It sits for summer days or winter days, been a couple years since she was fired up, still holding a full jug of oil. Been there for 10+ years.

Only use it for compression or neutral repairs. Does not handle tension well.

    You can tap it also
