got home today and noticed this hole in the driver side axle flange. Its the stock Dana 44 on my 1974 CJ5. is this some sort of access hole? The other side is closed up. Second question...where is the cover or better yet where can i find a new one. As always thanks again

Jeep PN 994259; Plug, Rear Axle Shaft Flange.

It provides access via an extension to the housing flange bolts.

It fell out. You could look under the brake drum. No source for a new one other than another axle, AFAIK.

Also, a machinist friend could almost certainly make a work-alike to replace it. They are good at stuff like that. You'd need a sample to duplicate.

There was a Dorman replacement for those. I can't seem to find the part number though so maybe they aren't making them anymore either.

i used a welch plug(looks like a flat freeze plug) ground to fit, the replacement axles had a slightly larger hole and the factory ones didnt fit.
