Wheel Identification ?

I'm going to be selling these wheels with my trailer project and I want to make sure I don't misrepresent them. I believe these are stock early CJ5 rims. Correct? The middle section is welded in place, not rivets.

P.S. They are 15" diameter wheels, 6" wide (measure 5.5" inside bead to inside bead).

 

Close-up of the center? I suspect these are Ford truck rims with the centers cut out. The Jeep rims have an L-shaped cross section (steel folded over) at the center hole, to reinforce the bolt holes.

BTW I'd define these as 5.5" rims, the inside bead measurement. Something of a misnomer to call them 6".

The guy I bought them from said they were off the CJ5 (late 60's I think) that was sitting in his driveway. He even had a fifth one still mounted on the rear of the Jeep as his spare that he did not want to sell me. I sure thought these were CJ rims, but I guess a lot can happen to a Jeep in 40+ years.

Those are late CJ, '77 and up. I've got a set just like them, welded not rivets. KEEP THEM, they fit over disc brakes! Try to go back and the spare from the guy.

 

Yep. Back picture says Jeep. Width is right for CJ too.

 

Thanks guys. Yeah, that little voice inside my head is telling me to keep them, but I'm trying to recover some of the cost of my Wagon upgrades. We'll see. I do have two other wheels that I could sell with the trailer instead, but I'd I have to pay to have them swapped over. More money gone.

 

Do you still have em? I'm in cali and have a need for them.

 

There were 2 styles of factory Jeep rims during the '60's and early '70's.
The one shown has what I would call the "reinforcing ring style". Don't know the technical term.
Th other style did not have the ring.
All of the early 16" rims have centers like the one pictured.

 

This is an old thread; the wheel was ID'd up above as a late CJ disc brake wheel. While they did have a similar external appearance, the '60s and early '70s steel wheels were riveted on the back side while the late '70s were welded.

I agree with Steve, not all 16" wheels had the raised section. For posterity, here is a 16" without the raised section; seller adamantly claimed this particular one was original to an early municipal-owned a1:

 

I have wheels that i'm trying to identify. from the information posted, what i have looks to be the 70's version. Howevever, there is a slight difference from the pics posted: on my wheels, there are dimples in between the bolt holes. anyone know why those are there and if these are cj rims? thanks

All the "modern" wheels from Jeep that I've seen (ie not from the 40s) have the lip on the back side that I point to here. The modern Jeep wheels have stamped-in bosses that the hubcaps snap over.



The lip reinforces the web (circled) between the center hole and the lug holes.

If you have modern-style wheels that do not have this lip, they are likely Ford (or Dodge?) pickup wheels with the center cut out. This is ok, but the web tends to crack. If your wheel cracks at the web, you must scrap it.

The wheel posted by Rodney looks like a Ford truck wheel to me. I don't recognize the wheel posted by unclebill.

Those will NOT fit over disc brakes and are off an early cj5 66-70 is my guess ot as tim says off a ford or dodge. I have seen at least 5 diff. stiles of early CJ wheels now, and they all don't fit over discs as stated by others. The determining factor as to weather they will fit over discs is the outer edge on the back of the rim the fist lip were it drops down should be around 2 1/4" or so deep. ( as seen in timgr's photo) On the early rims its only 3/4" or so and then comes back in on an angle. (You can see it in unclebill's picture of the back side of his rim) The front of the both rims can look almost identical.
