I get the feeling that my stock alternator isn't the best choice for a winch and electric fan. Anyone know any good junkyard swaps? Or any other good options?

take your alt to a auto eletrical shop and have them build you a high output unit. i have a wider pulley (5/8" wide vs 1/2"), and heavy duty guts. instead of the stock 37 amp, i have a 150 amp w/110 amp @ idle. also you need to upgrade your battery if you plan on winching. unsure of your budget, but if you can swing it, get the optima (or a cloan).

I've already got the optima and I think I'm sure we have an alternator shop around here. Thanks

I had one built for me. 100 amp alternator, and one wire hookup. I got rid of all the voltage regulator on the fender, and went internal. I love it. :D I run my winch and lights all day no problem. Did you ditch your manual fan, 73CJ?

If you want an alternator big enough to run a winch. Check out these guys. They have anything your power-hungry heart desires.
