What Did You Do To Your Jeep Today?

This past weekend, I installed a cut-off switch in the passenger-side wheel well. It connects/disconnects the lines from the positive battery terminal to the solenoid.

Below pic: ignore blue lines; those are for two running lights I installed on bumper. The step-bit tool in my hand is what I used to cut a 3/4 inch hole in fender to insert the switch. I had to order in at Home Depot.

Finally got the pinion seal changed on the Dana 27. It started leaking about 2 months ago, but I could never find time to get back to it...

 

Welding phase complete. Off to paint soon.

 

Changed the oil, went to Shell Rotella F1 40 wt. Engine seems quieter now. Checked the point gap, timing and tightened the fan belt. Checked the air in the tires. Going on a drive this Sunday up the Feather River canyon to visit friends in Quincy. Another shakedown trip in preparation for the 1000 mile Oregon trip in August.

 

Winched down two hung up white oak trees. My own fault but I had nowhere else to drop them except into the trees behind them. Made more sunlight in the garden. Drove the Jeep on a pile of errands with my son Alekczander. He loves going with no top on the 6. Installed new white spoke 15x8 wheels a few days ago, the 15x6 steelies were just too skinny to allow the bfg All Terrains 33/10.50/15 to lay flat on the road, plus they rubbed in the wheel wells when fully flexed out and on the springs. Farm Jeep Willy looks like it's now in the seventies, instead of the 60s look it had.

 

Should switch the ground, not as much fire risk.

 

Ripped the heart, lungs and liver out. Going to get chassis painted tomorrow. Milestone!

 

Over the last several days my daughter and I have managed to accomplish alot.

My daughter is a welder on her high school robotics team and she is way better at welding than I am. We made a spare tire carrier. When you are the weaker welder you get the boring job of holding things steady while she welds.





The tire carrier pivots and swings down if you need to open the tailgate. It has bolts thru the tailgate latches to keep it from opening. There are bronze bushings inside the pivots. It's really stable and does not rattle or shake at all.



And it's super strong

If you look closely in the photo below my rear cross member is swiss cheese and I can't believe how thin and weak the stock cross member is.



So we remedied that by welding on this super thick reinforcement.



Then I cut out some plates to start boxing in the frame at the back.



They fit like this, not bad

We also notched my engine mount for my steering column. The previous owner put a body lift on this thing (you can see it clearly in the photo of the cross member reinforcement) which allowed the steering shaft to clear the motor mount to the saginaw box. The body lift has to go, it's awful. But the shaft won't clear without the lift so we notched and welded in reinforcement around the notch so the steering shaft has room to clear without the body lift.

And finally I got my wide track Dana 30 assembled with new 3:73 gears to match the rear and a locker. Looking forward to getting this thing installed and get the disc brakes working well.



Now I have a lot of painting to do before all this new stuff starts to rust.

 

And weld in shorts,tough girl,cool project.

 

jeep is pretty much stripped down, to swap frame. test fit new hangers and anchors. new frame is in very good condition, with flash rust only - no scale, pitting, etc. i can still read all of the part numbers on the frame pieces, and the partial vin stamping.

 

I opened a box of parts under my bench labeled "CJ parts" and discovered parts I have not seen for 10 years. Then I closed the box....

 

Are your hangers homemade or part of a kit? Looks nice, whatever it is!

 

When I went to the Bantam Jeep Festival the trailer brakes did not work. When I got there I started looking.

I have a dual battery setup the second is mounted behind the passenger seat, and is connected by a solenoid to the main battery thru a set of Harbor Freight 6awg battery cables. When I wired the trailer brake module I got power from these cables at the solenoid, which is mounted on the front of the pass wheel well.
I grabbed the battery cable at the solenoid to move it out of the way to get the meter closer, it came off the terminal. It was corroded to powder.
So today I finally got around to replacing the cables, once removed I sliced down a foot or more, when I tried to remove the insulation the wire just fell apart

These were Harbor Freight jumper cables and less than 1 yr old. This wire had to have been heavily corroded before they put on the insulation. Made in China

Towed tractor to the pull at the Endless Mountains tractor show this past weekend. The little Ford did OK. 5th place out of around 12.
