+1! That’s not a fun place to be.

It can tackle the rubicon, but the freeway kills it. :DIt’s mad at you for spending too much time with that bigger, older woman.

just got it home...wasn't too far from home - maybe 10 miles - and my wife was able to bring the truck and tow bar, but yup, quite the unpleasant place to be stuck in the middle of the 'central valley' along I-25 and next to the rail yards in the middle of Denver just as morning rush hour was ending - was headed to a trail run with some friends. It broke the clutch cable at the cable stop at the pedal end - the adjuster nut on the fork end seemed just fine. Easy fix, but have to get the part....This one was new 5-6 years ago or so (whenever I rebuilt the T14) - cheap Omix stuff (or maybe i had it adjusted a bit too tight?) - gonna see if I can find a better quality one, and maybe get a spare for the parts bag as well. When I get it off, I'll get a better look, but from my initial by the side of the hwy inspection it looks like it might not have actually broke the cable, but maybe just pulled it out off the stop end - maybe its repairable...not sure if those stop ends are 'compression-squeezed' or brazed/welded in some manner? Wife is happy as now I have time for some yard and house chores instead of going wheeling...

Get one from Inline Tube. Quality stuff, built like the originals:
With a little effort, you can drive without the clutch. I've driven home some of my crappy old clunkers by starting the engine in gear to get going and floating the gears without the clutch. To come to a stop put it in neutral, shut the engine off once stopped, put in first and repeat. Of course, you'll have to disable the clutch safety switch if there is one.

X2 on the inline tube brand!
I do however keep a cheap omix unit in the underseat tool box. When I broke mine I drove home without using the clutch. :banghead:

Awesome! I was just about to ask who makes the quality ones - I remember Doug had posted it up a few times, but was still searching....Also from my records, it looks like the clutch cable I broke was from Crown - same Crown one sold by all the standard vendors - so not sure its rebranded Omix junk or what - seems like more and more of the Crown stuff is just the same as Omix.

When I broke the adjuster nut (that is also when I replaced the clutch cable) 5-6 years ago, I started it in first and babied it home, but I was on city streets pretty close to my house (was on first test drive after rebuilding the T14/D18). I didn't want to mess with it on 10 lane interstate with alternating stop and go rush hour and nothing but spaghetti intersections of high speed ramps everywhere....It 'popped' as I eased into first from a stop in a traffic back-up. I typically drive in the right most lane on the hwy around here at more cj5 speeds as opposed to 75, so it was pretty simple to just push it over to the shoulder. In the 40 sec it took me to realize it wasn't going to go anywhere (and I tried starting it in gear once), and realized it was an easy push to relative safe shoulder - people behind me started zipping past me on the right shoulder (I thought they might even go 2-wide!). I guess they wanted to race up 100 yards to where it was stopped again...In short, it didn't seem like a good place to be trying to ease it along with a bad clutch.

That's the truth. It would be a struggle in city rush hour to say the least.

That is a good way to do it - I will do the same....I am going to get a replacement adjuster nut for the spare parts bag as well. Thanks to Chris I have a good spare fuel pump (I also have a little electric one that I carry), and I finally got around to replacing the spare small front u-joint from last year's Rubicon trip, and I got a set of u-joint u-bolt straps, and thanks to Posi I have a replacement bell crank shaft and nut (although one day the Ross will have to go).... getting the parts bag pretty full!

You need to send Steve a bill for the U joint and straps! Or you could come to the rubicon and hand deliver it to him. I'm sure you will receive prompt payment!:watch:

maybe I should have gone that route - if I trashed the T14 that would mean its T18 swap time?

I'll take beer and some good spotting through Little sluice....as you know I am kind of hanging on the periphery on the Rubicon trip....continuing to monitor C19 as well as family and other trip/travel developments, and maybe even the budget a bit. Jen is back working as of a couple weeks ago, and we also monitoring a possible road trip visit to her family around 7/4 or so...in theory I could then head straight out to Tahoe when we return, but I would be going solo as she would have to work. There is a lot of potential interest - wondering how many will actually go and what is a reasonable group size/# of jeeps.

I was on the phone (business stuff) with Steve when you replied! Steve says he will bring a 12 pack of your choice, and rotate beers into the cooler as you drink them! He said he will keep 2 beers in cooler at all times..... for the duration of the 12 pack!
I am also very interested in how many jeeps we will have for the group run. Steve is thinking that if there are more than last year.... just break up into groups and stagger our start. My thought is the more the merrier..... besides we need to give Posi and Jezber proper sendoffs!
I can also provide you a passenger if you need one. He is an experienced wheeler, toyota guy, who has done rubicon, fordyce, deer valley and crew cheif for Ultra 4 car.
Don't worry, I can concoct solution for almost everything...... :D

That's why I use to carry a large size channel lock plier when driving 67 Commando. Broke a couple of times, but could lock on the channel lock, and pull cable with my left hand to shift. Not a fix, but got me home.

I contacted Inline Tube and they report the length of the cable is 53 1/8" whereas the Crown replacements are 58 1/4"....wondering if its going to be an issue. The OAL is not necessarily an issue with the way the system is set-up, its more about length of the inner cable compared to the length of housing sleeve that has fixed mounting points.

I've got an inline tube one on the shelf here. I can crawl under the '71 and verify it looks like it will fit properly tonight. I'm guessing it will because I got the recommendation from others on the site.

I am pulling mine right now....I am going to measure the OAL of the cable, and then the length of the housing....The sales contact at inline tube couldn't give me that info...a lot of people on here have used that cable, so guessing it will work, and like most things, it might need a little 'working' to get it just right. I am going to need to redo the clutch on the wagon, and this cable might be a good solution for that as well - would need to add the frame and D18 brackets for it to work, but that is just some more fun practice with fabricating stuff....

Since I'm working from home, I took a break and went out to the shop.

It's the part number they specify for 66-72 Jeep CJ-5:

    Dimensions:

Mating surface of casing to mating surface of casing: 38 5/8"

Total inner cable length from tip of threaded end to center of the pivot pin: 61 1/2"

Total length of adjustment threads: 3 1/2"

...and fitting it under the Jeep which is a 1971 V6 with a T14 and factory looking cable brackets on the frame and transfer case, it looks too long.

This is with the housing ends lined up with the brackets and the pedal end of the cable lined up with the existing cable:

Looks like the inner cable needs to be about 4 to 4 1/2 inches shorter. The housing length is very close to the original.

Might be perfect when I put in the T-98 later, but it's definitely not a bolt-in to the Jeep as is.

I recall someone saying they'll do custom lengths for a little more money.
