I've been taking for granted what the PO said about the OD in my jeep. However, after owning the thing for a while now, I've found some contradictions from what he said and whats factual with the jeep so now I'm having second thoughts with what he told me about the OD popping out of gear.

For one thing he said if it is in OD and it pops out of gear, it could cause the rear axle to "lock up". Is this true or even possible?

It has never popped out of gear when not-in-overdrive, nor does it feel like it wants to when in OD and holding the gear lever in place.

My questions are these 1) what kind of test can one do to check and 2) can one shift into OD, perhaps tie the lever in place with a bungie cord so it "can't" pop out so one can drive around with the OD engaged to see if the OD otherwise works ok?

    Thank you.

There is a synchronizer in them, but even if it popped out of gear, the only thing that would happen is it would be like being in nuetral. Basically there is engaged-nuetral-disengaged. I wouldn't worry about anything locking up.

The T90's have a rep for popping out of 2nd -- esp. under compression brakeing. I don't recall my OD ever popping out.

To add to the above posts, maybe the PO didn't have it engaged good and it popped out of gear? Maybe someone told him the axle could lock up and he believed it? Also a bungee cord wouldn't keep it from popping out. I'd just drive it with the OD engaged and see what happens. You don't have to be going fast to drive with it engaged.
