For Sale Vintage Warn 3 Ring M2 Hubs $250/set

    For sale, 2 sets of fully restored and tested Warn 3 ring locking hubs. These fit the axels that have the snap rings. I completely took these apart, cleaned, sanded down the outer aluminum body to remove as many of the 50-60 years worth of dings and scrapes as possible, replaced the 2 O-rings which include the correct beveled one that goes around the brass knob. They were then taped off and the recessed area of the rings were painted black like originally and the brass dial was painted as originally with red dots and black wording. Note that at some time in the past, someone had used pliars or whatever to turn them when stiff. I did a little work to remove some edges, but choose not to get aggressive with removing metal. They were then greased and reassembled. I installed them on my 1958 CJ5 to test to make sure they engaged and disengaged correctly. The brass knobs now easily turn from Free to Locked and back. I choose NOT to clear coat them but you could easily do that. They come with a new Warn brand gasket between two halves of the body. I have attached pics of what they looked like when I got the batches. They were nasty and most did not turn freely.

    Nice job. These look great.

    Where did you find the beveled O rings? Warn still supply them?

    No Warn isn't. The guy (Jessie I think) at 4x4 Torq King custom made them. No idea if he still has or not.

    No bolts or locks. The locks are $18 at Walcks Lock Out Hub Lock Washer Kit Warn Hub Only As you can see from the pics, apparently some people just used lock washers instead of the proper one, thus leaving some marks in the housings. I tried to remove some of the marks, but short of having the proper spinning sander, I was only able to do so much. The bolts that came with the originals were mostly trash, bent, bad threads, etc. some were even the wrong thread. Go figure. I needed 12 for mine and a bunch of them were the shorter ones for the factory hubs so no idea why they were included. I may have a couple but not enough to for a set.

    I had not planned on doing it as a service. I started off with many more than I ended up with. Some were so full of water, rust, dirt, muck, etc., that they became parts. After cleaning up one set, the housing was so badly pitted it looked almost like it had set in acid. So the first thing would be yours condition, needed parts if any, and level of restoration you are expecting. I started with this as simply a learning experience so I got better the further I went. I learned how to get thru the problems areas as I went. It's a much faster process now, but still multiple hours. I wanted to get my learning curve down before I did my final set for my much nicer Wilbur Wagon project, which is still waiting. So it depends on if Jessie is still selling the O-rings and what condition yours are in. Send me some pics to my email mickey@dilloware.com.

    Having restored a set of these hubs myself, and knowing how much work goes into getting them to look good and work well again, I think the price Mickey's asking is very reasonable.

    I am surprised when I think back on the time spent. Once apart, cleaned, media blasted, sanded, painted, etc, the putting back together really only takes maybe 15 minutes once you've been there and know what to do. ONCE YOU KNOW. But the cleaning alone probably took 30 minutes alone to avoid ruining my media in the blaster. Then the sanding to remove old scaring adds up, let alone the multiple steps in masking and painting.

    Yes sanded down. Lots of work buy hand. Then I learned how to use my bench belt sander and spin them around a dowl but it takes time and paying attention to detail or you could get a flat spot in a hurry. IT can get spinning really fast which doesn't help, so it's a let it spin to keep circular but using thumb to put drag on it so it really sands. Damn near lost a finger tip til I got a handle on it, so don't do this at home. I am a trained professional, at least now after a few sore fingers and 4 sets of hubs.
