A little bit, but there are a few major upgrades over Dana's design. The size and strength increase is substantial (especially in the kingpin bearing area - I wish I had a Dana shim to hold side-by-side), the sealing is different, and the studs that hold the hub in place use cone washers to lock them in place. This eliminates any loosening that leads to shearing. Guys who have issues with this might want to look into getting a reamer and using these.

Rear axle brake lines are done. Lines were recycled from the mess-up. I’ll pick up some stick-on line clips to keep vibrations down.

I picked up some Ford Light Gray tractor paint (one spray can and one gallon) for the cage, and I’m not happy with it. It’s not as gray as I was hoping. It’s closer to off-white. I think it’s too much of a stark contrast against the dark gray and the blue I plan to use on the body. Or not? Maybe it’s just not what I was expecting but will look ok? Opinions?

Here it is next to something pure white for comparison.

So, the axles are done, and it’s a roller again. (Note the tie rod, drag link and track bar color.)

My calibrated eye would definitely call that Cream or Off-white... certainly not grey. The neighbor has an old, original 8N Ford and the grey on it is very light but it still looks grey. Maybe a two or three shades lighter than the Massey Grey?

Looking at some Ford 8N images online and in most the it looks grey, but some do look a rather creamy light tan and not grey at all. I wonder if there is more than one paint code or if different paint manufacturers have slightly differing formulas?

It’s difficult to be critical of your work but it does seem too light in color.

Also, when your finished with this project it should be put on display so engineering students from around the world can study it and be inspired.

Thanks guys! I’m glad it’s not just me. Rustoleum’s “light machine gray” is the color I want, but nobody sells it locally, and I’m not paying $60 + shipping to buy it online.

This is what I got. The gray before ‘65 was darker, but it has a yellowish tint to it that just looks bleh. The color on the strip where it mentions the hue is much darker than my sample, but the color on the matching spray can looks almost white -matching the sample. Maybe them’s just the breaks of using cheap paint.

On another note, Summit’s shipping is too fast. I ordered brake tubing on Thursday afternoon thinking it would get here some time next week. It showed up yesterday, and I had questions to answer.
    :worry::madwife:
But at least now I can finish the brakes.

buy a quart of black in the same brand as the gallon and chuck a little in the gallon to make the grey you want start easy as a little black goes a long way

or get fancy and use a little of both. general motors trained me to match paint years ago its not like crayons dump enough random paint together and get mud brown. i can dump a bunch o random colors here and get.....you guessed it mud brown. once you have said mud brown you have reached the end nothing you add will change that color.

I would, but I’m really trying to keep this simple so I can grab a can of spray paint and do touch up. I like to squeeze jeeps where they don’t belong, so my cages take a ton of abuse.

This process is sooooo sloooow.

The new long section of brake line is in, which allowed me to install the muffler and tailpipe, and the fuel pump/fuel lines. I was going to wait and paint the engine accessory mounts the lighter gray, but I decided to go with the darker gray instead. They’re drying. The transmission gasket & seal kit should be here any time, then I can install that and drop the engine back in place.

Is it the parking brake lines/cables that loop around to the back?
If you put them to the front, how do you keep them from snagging on sticks and such? Seems like the one thing the TC mounted brake has in its favor.
