    Thanks guys.

I actually had to look up those nuts. I'm not sure I knew they existed. Thanks for the mention.

That fender is complete, it must be an illusion? Not sure what you see?

If you're using a 9", you're one step closer than I am to using what I really want (but will never afford), a Currie High 9. It gains about 3 1/2"of pinion height. <drool>

I am getting ready to disassemble this thing so I can switch my shop back to a wood shop and get some projects done. I figured I'd throw the body on it one last time to make sure everything fits, now that I have the mounts in place. I can't believe how close my 6-year-old floor-work came to actually fitting. The trans mount (that I had originally planned on going under the trans) was the only mount that didn't fit. Notchy, notchy.

Sighting from the rear at rear floor level, you can see that only the shifter is higher. The floor pans might not be that offensive after all.

I sat in it to see how the shifter will work out in it's present location. Not too bad...

This might be my last submission to this thread for a fair amount of time. I have some welding to finish up, but I can't move forward without knowing what I'm doing for axles and springs, and I need money for that. Back to work. Thanks for following up to this point!

    Ok, one more post...

I got all the welds done on the frame last night. It's ready to be stashed away...

And just another reason to love Volvos. Front and rear main seals are in/accessible by these aluminum covers. You don't even have to drop the oil pan to replace the main seals.

So, why stash it away? Why not get out the air wand, blow everything off, let it settle, shop vac it and make cabinets using the frame as a table to glue carcasses up on or something?

do you only get a certain period of time every 5 years to get work done on it, like some sort of jeep leap year?

    Haha!
Yes, actually. It's no coincidence that it's been almost 7 years since I worked on this, and our oldest child is 7. I've been minimally employed since then, and full-time Mr. Mom since my wife makes way more than I could, and she has been taking classes to get a second bachelors degree in her "spare time". Her schooling is wrapping up and the kids are getting more self-sufficient, so now I can spread out a little further for income to support this experiment... (oh, and my family).

I have to pack it up while working with wood because I'd much rather be working with steel. It's too tempting to walk over and stare and dream... Out of sight, out of mind! The extra shop space is nice too.

I can't just leave things alone. I finished cleaning up the shop last night, and it just looked too darn clean. So I went out and found the old Volvo rear and dug it out of 3' of snow.

I was going to just let it sit there and thaw, then I had another "Eureka!" moment. I have been researching like crazy, trying to source a companion flange that would fit onto the 26 spline output shafts of my D300 t-case that will allow me to run the flanged Volvo driveshafts. I found something new I could make work online, but at $100 a piece, ouch. I need at least two.

I found out that the pinion on most D30s or D44s utilize this spline, but the only vehicles that used (non-CV) flanges on D44s were Isuzu Amigos and Honda Passports - not exactly common at my U-pull-it yard.

Then it hit me like a baseball bat upside the head. The Volvo 1031 rear is a descendant of the Dana 30. What are the chances the pinion flange would match up to the D300 output shafts?

EXACT MATCH. Inside, outside, length and spline. I swear Volvos are the biggest untapped resource for jeep parts out there!

I'm wondering what years of Volvos used this rear end? Did they ever use power-loc or other limited slip differentials?
An just curious what ratio is the one you got?

The earlier 240/260s used the 1030, which was basically a Volvo-specific housing with Dana 30 internals. Any locker/LS options that jeep D30s have, those axles share.
As much strength as a standard-rotation D30 has, remember that it is even stronger when put in the rear (or going in reverse when a front axle). These axles are really hard to destroy.

Later 240/260s, all 740/760s and some 940/960s used this one, which is a 1031, sort of a Dana 30/Dana 35 hybrid. The housing was massively improved, and used the ring and pinion similar to a D35, but the case/carrier similar to a D30.

They are rare, especially in this country, but there was a 1041 optioned in some 940/960s, which was a 1031 with a factory locker(!!). I think there were other factory LS options available for the 1031, but the reviews aren't great in the strength department. There are pictures of broken LS units all over the internet. I still have yet to find out if any D30 internals fit the 1031. Opinions differ on the Volvo forums.

This one I have is a 4.10 ratio from what I can tell without pulling the cover.

Oh, and the Volvo 240/260s WMS to WMS width is only 53.5", but the only bolt pattern that was used was 5x108mm (5x4.25").
The 740/760s were a lot wider, and most 940/960s had independent rear suspension. My rear (from a 740) measures 59.5" WMS to WMS.
