So todays problem with my f head rebuild again concerns the machine shop. The exhaust valve guides are driven in just a tad under 1 1/2 inches below the deck. Manual specs 1 inch for optimal performance. can guides be removed at home? I have seen the tool for driving them in. I hate to take this thing back to the shop, but Ill probably have to.

As a bonus, I just this morning realized they are installed with the tapered end down, as in upside down.

46 cj2a valve train work in chassis

Here's a link to an Lhead engine I replaced the guides in. Be sure you know which are the intake guide locations DAMHIK

Includes drawing of tooling for installing new guides

You PAID them to do this correctly. This is just completely unacceptable.

Thats likely why they are set too deep; the taper doesn't "seat" in the block, so they drifted them deeper to get them to seat well.
Bronze guides of iron? Keep in mind the valve seats are ground using the guides as the position of where the valve sits. It should go back to the shop to rework the seats once the guides are replaced (unless you're set up to do this).

Not understanding, once the guides are flipped over and the depth corrected, the valves still meet the block in the same place, they just drop through the guides, right? I don't see how it affects the seats?

I did have to ream one hole that was a bit tight, I used valve lapping compound to seat the valves to the block.

New or repositioned guides don't necessarily land the valve in the same spot where the seat was cut. When cutting valve seats, the guide is used with a pilot to center the cutter exactly where the valve will seat. If the guides have been replaced, there is almost always a an uneven cut of the old seat as the cutter begins to make its fresh cut.
When hardened seats are installed, the cut in the head (or block for old Jeeps) to accept the new seat is once again centered by the guide. The guides are the first thing that get checked or replaced when doing a valve job as the valve and seat are indexed off the guide.

Video of engine before valve guide replacement. Valves rattling from idle to midrange rpm.

Video of engine after guide replacement and hand lapping valves to orig seat...you be the judge no more valve train noise other than needs tappet adjustment

I think I have it right now
