On the drivers side of my 79’ CJ5 mounted on the fender next to the Master Cylinder and the windshield washer reservoir, there is this canister with, what look like vacuum hoses.
I was looking underneath the Jeep and notice that there is no bottom to this canister, Looks like a plastic canister.
Can someone identify this canister for me? It’s not clear on the after market manual that I have as to what it is.
    Thanks all.
    Pete

Maybe the vapor recovery canister? It absorbs the fumes from the fuel tank and carburetor when the engine isn't running, and feeds them back to be burned when it is.

You really need a factory manual, Pete. They are ca $70, but the information to dollar ratio is way higher than the Haynes/Chiltons, plus they cover only your year, so there's less confusion especially when it comes to emissions-retlated stuff.

Yea that is the location of mine as well...connects to carb via the bowl fitting and back to the gas tank via another line. Make sure if you remove it you save it...we have to have them here to pass the visual emissions portion of the test

I think if you are looking around for part replacements most part dealers list them and the filters for them as evaporative canisters
