V8 Exhaust manifolds issue

    I bought new exhaust manifolds for my 72 cj5. Got started on installation earlier this evening, and the center part is hitting the head bolt heads. Not allowing manifolds to flush up to the exhaust ports. Anyone had this issue? The only solution I see is to use a burr and die grinder to notch the manifolds so they don't contact bolts. Is this the correct way to solve my problem?

    Pic of interference issue? Host on Photobucket or the like and link here. I would hesitate to recommend grinding until I could see the interference issue.

    This is center exhaust ports. Boltheads shown is catching the manifold. Bolt is at angle to exhaust ports, so the manifold is actually touching the "top" of the bolt and not the side.

    Where re did you get manifolds? Dorman ones are not cast correct

    These are Omyx-Aida supposedly OEM replacements. I ended up grinding them, mainly for the sake of time. Used a 1/4" carbide burr. It didn't take much to make them flush up easily. I would take a little off and try them. Took about three tries before they fit like I wanted them too.

    edit: BTW, I read your whole rebuild thread. That is one awesome machine you have. You make it look easy! I know there's lots of work goes in to it that can't be conveyed with pics. Your attention to detail is a trait I'm lacking!

    Update: today I got the manifolds on, then moved on to the carb, using an edlebrock 600 that was with the jeep when I bought it. Supposedly has been rebuilt. needle valves pass the leak test, so I'm going to give it a try. installed the oil pan the other day, changed the filter today and filled it with oil.

    Starter was bad, so after a run to the parts store, got the new starter installed. Decided to turn it over and check to make sure oil pump was picking up the oil. Pulled the nipple off the oil sending unit. After a few revolutions, oil came pumping out, so I think the pump will be fine.

    Then decided to check into the fuel system. While I was turning the engine over, I had the fuel line running in a bucket. What came out was very discolored and trashy. Decided to pull the tank, and found another problem. Top of the tank is rusted through in the indention where the fuel sending unit is. So, ordered a new tank and sending unit, along with new filler and vent hoses, ( dry rotted).

    I will try to get pics uploaded as soon as I can. I'm hoping to be able to fire it off next weekend if everything goes as planned with the fuel tank. Between now and time tank gets here, I will try to blow out the fuel lines good and make sure whether they need to be replaced.
