the bolt in the picture is below the oil level
and that hole is most likely thru the case and into the oil
if it were me, before I pull the unit out, I would first make sure that bolt and the others are tight.
I might then drain the oil out, pull that bolt, and put some sealer on the threads after cleaning the hole real good.
just a thought before seperating the two units

What if the port between the two was at the same level (or slightly below) each of the fill holes?

Obviously the higher level is going to migrate into the lower level till they even out. That's why I got curious and measured the height of the fill plugs. The transmission is higher than the t-case. Until we discussed this a while ago I'd never really checked.

That's what I've always assumed, I guess. I've always filled the Transfer case first.

Really hard to find leaks over the internet, but you may want to check that front output shaft seal. Look at the second pic. It looks like it could be leaking out behind the yoke and getting slung all over. Notice how the yoke appears dry but the T-case is wet. That would account for oil being up higher than where you think it's leaking.

Changing the output shaft seal is very easy: Pull the U-bolts off the drive shaft at the T-case end and check for play in the yoke. Slop in the yoke caused a leak on mine; had to tighten to 120lbs. Otherwise, spin the nut off and replace the seal. Driveshaft vibration will also chew up the seal.

If it's just a small leak, you might be going through a lot of effort for not much gain by pulling that T-case down; JEEPS seem to mark their territory whenever they feel like it. Just keep the trans topped off and consider the undercoating corrosion prevention.

JEEPs will generally fight to the bitter end for their right to leak at will. Mine have learned to pretend not to leak until I'm confident enough to actually say out loud it doesn't leak.

I'm dealing with a very similar issue with my '62. As these guys said earlier, pulling the D18 is quite a job - I'm working on that now. Not something I would do unless there was simply no other way to cure the problem(s).

Pulled the transmission and transfer case off today. Main bearing shot, moving around in the casing. Couple of gears looking suspect, no wonder all the noise. Sent both off to the local transmmision shop for rebuilds.

I quess this is part of breaking in the new, (new to me), rig.
