I have a 1975 cj5 w/I6. It has Amc 20 rear and dana 30 front( both out of a 78 ) I have a chattering noise coming from the transfer case or transmission it seems to be associated w/ the transfer case shifter. The linkage seems loose I can move the shifter back and forth a couple of inches when in gear. Any ideas or common problems? Thanks

Is there any difference in the sound whether you're in 4wd or 2wd? Hi or Lo range? Do both the transmission & transfer case shift normally and stay in gear? Have you checked your U-joints for play?

I had the same problem. Have you greased the D20 Shifter? There is a Grease Zert under the cover. This tightened mine up and ceased the chatter...

I have what sounds like the same problem. When I am driving on pavement for any length of time, my transfer case shifter drives me nuts. When I've had enough, I shove a large chunk of foam rubber between the shifter and the transmission shifter. The rattling stops. I guess, if you tryed that test, at least you would know if it is just a rattling shifter or something more serious. Good luck. MIke

Mike, can you post some pix of your rig? Sounds a lot like mine, I'd like to check it out.

    Eric.

I Will Get Some Pictures Togethor As Soon As I Can. Thanks For The Suggestions. I Have Some Foam I Am Going To Shove Down In There And See If It Helps. I Went Through The Linkage And Tightened All I Could Seemed To Take Some Of The Play Out But The Chattering Noise Is Still There. Field Hopped It All Weekend And Never Had It Jump Out Of Gear. It Seems The Noise Gets Louder The Faster I Go.

On the 20 case in my commando there is an anti-chatter spring in the shifter box. It looks like a flat leaf spring. I think it to to keep the shifter pawl from rattling around in the box.
