Timing the 304 V8...

    I removed the distributor hold down bracket to rotate it to adjust the trimming to see if that is causing the engine to die under load, however it is solidly in there.
    My previous jeep had a 258 and it was easy to adjust.

    Is it corroded in there? Ever had this issue?
    I hit it wit pb blaster yesterday still nothing.
    I think she hates me. :(

    It may take some wiggling but it hould eventually pop out, remember at the bottom of the distributor are gears to drive the oil pump that are tightly meshed. Perhaps some penetrating oil around the base of the distributor may work and tapping with a rubber mallet. I'd advise against trying to pry it out with a screwdriver or something similar~leave that for a last resort.

    Thanks turbogus, I'll keep at it.
    I was told she's been sitting for 8 years so I guess anything that was not covered in oil started to bond with itself.

    It just occurred to me, especially from my recent thread Zen and the art of bolt removal that I should've remembered dissimilar metals joined together Galvanic corrosion - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia can bond making removal difficult. In the case of that bolt it was recessed into a corner, very difficult to get at. luckily there's more room around this distributor on our AMC V8's to get at 'em

    If you're just trying to break it loose, tossing a round wrench, chain wrench, or even pipe wrench around the distributor body, assuming you can get it in there, and gently wiggling it can help a bunch. Just be careful if it's a chain or pipe wrench, to not mar up the housing (if you worry about it looking pretty....)

    I ordered a new carb, I'll see how that goes before I time her. Still need to get the drum brakes squared away. I'm gonna save up for the disc brake conversion.

    She runs good enough to drive to work daily, I'm working on tuning up the steering now, it's a little sloppy.
    Its a drivable project I have much more to do....

    Good choice. Worked well on my last CJ and is easy to rebuild when that time comes.
