A dwell meter measures the angle of rotation of the cam through which the points are opened and closed, and registers the dwell angle - the period when they are closed.

Just a follow up, got the 225 V6 running smoothly. I found an older post from Mcruff that called described the shape of the cam that opens and closes the points in the distributor as follows: "An oddfire pointed distributor, will have lobes and plateaus".

My distributor was installed off a tooth. I pulled it out and with the timing at 5 BTDC, made sure when the distributor was installed the points were set just opening at a lobe, the rotor was just coming to tower #1 on the cap.

Prior the distributor was set when the points were opening at a plateau and the rotor was just leaving tower #1 on the cap.

So here is the pic again of the cam that opens and closes the points:

The Blue arrow points to a plateau and the Black arrow points to a lobe.
