yeah, the rod bearings are Clevite, not sealed power, I requested the Clevite.

Labor day tomorrow, only a 6 hour day tomorrow, beats the 10 hour days for sure. Will get the pistons in after work and maybe the lap the exhaust valves if I can find my lapping compound. Its somewhere in my mess, but who knows where.

ok, I got restarted on rebuilding it, and ran into yet another problem, the oil pump gasket I can't find, none of the 3 I got work, what is the part # for the right one!?

I also got the new bearing in! yay, and I didn't drop them this time! And put the front plate on, in the right order this time too!

Another quick question, crankshaft thrust washers. I don't remember taking any out. I can't seem to mind any that I know of in my shop. Their is a little endplay on the crank, you can barely feel it. I don't have the fancy gauges, but if their is supposed to be some thrust washers?

ok, last one. tabs on rod bearings install toward cam or block when looking down on the bottom, installing the rods and pistons.

OK, figured out the gasket problem...I feel like a dumbass saying this, but I had it all along...lol

But I did find a baggie, that says "flywheel studs" ... I got to take the crank out again. Man.

Question, I al going to use a Pinto flywheel and clutch, I heard about it somewhere around the forum, anything special I need to do at the moment to run the Pinto stuff?

Exhaust valves are lapped, and installed. I had a lot of trouble with getting the keepers back in...stubby hands.

    Oil pump is installed.

Pics will come later tonight after I drop the crank, again, and put those studs back in.

alright got the flywheel bolts and stud back in, took out just the rear main to do so, whole procure took less than 5 minutes, while talking on the phone (it was on speaker phone....girls call you at the most inconvenient times.)

now the pistons are to go in. the indents on the pistons go forward on the engine right? I am assuming this.

My crank shaft end play is exactly .003 right on the money.

About 2 more hours of toil will get the engine back together to be in run-able condition. Lets hope I don't get stuck on the phone for 40 minuets again.

You did point the oiling holes in the rods the same way they were when they came out right?

I was looking at this tonight intensely. The # id on the rods should face toward the cam right? and the slot on the piston should face the cam side too right. Well, the machine shop put it so that the slot faced the opposite side, awat from the exhaust valves. Did they do that wrong? If I point the cut out on the top of the piston toward the front, the # id on the rods would face away from the cam...

THINGS DID NOT GO WELL TONIGHT.

First, it was the rings. I got the bottom 3 peice ring, the middle compression rings, BUT NO TOP OIL RING! I got the pistons and rings as a matched set, right bellow each other in the book.

I may need to get 4 custom 1/16 top rings. Damn, that pushes things back a week or so.

Began to reassemble the head, since I found the problem with the rings...yeah I need a bigger valve spring compressor. Maybe get one tomorrow, but still, i got nothing done tonight!

calling it quits early before I break something.

Look in your FSM, I believe it shows 1 oil control ring and 2 compression rings with an empty slot at the top.

hua, interesting, it does only mention 3 rings. However a dodge 218 I took apart has a top oil ring on it. And the old pistons from my L-head, the top ring land is full of carbon.

Will look into this more tomorrow, I got a factory rebuild manual somewhere around here.

that top slot is a 'heat dam'. It does NOT take a ring. 134 pistons have 4 slots but only 3 rings.

Did you take pictures and reference notes during the teardown?

ok thanks I found my factory manual and it confirmed this.

you need notes while taking apart and engine lol just kidding, I did tke some, but not pictures of any I need now, the factory manual I found has it all step by step though, should go smoothly here on out...knock on wood.

I did also find a not that the shop that did the mechaning, it made not of the direction the pistons were orientated when they took them off.

Also, what does the slot in the side of the piston do anyway? oil drain back is my first guess.

the T-slot is for heat expansion, as far as I've heard. The set I have in there now does not have it (bought them 18 years ago). Looks like any of the new sets, available now, have it.

about 2 hours of toil did pay off, just waiting for a valve spring compressor to come in, I had to special order it, I guess no one does their own head work anymore.

do have a question, I know about the intake valve o-rings, but what are the other ones for? See picture

also, the pistons come up, flush to the deck at TDC, and the bottom skirt gots maybe .040 or so bellow the cylinder wall at BDC.
