In my 73 CJ5 I removed the engine, tranny, & TC. I'm having the 258 rebuilt. I got a T14 & a D20. My question is how difficult is it to rebuild these two myself. I have a FSM but have never done this before. Has anyone ever installed a Tera Low Gear kit for the D20? I am thinking a/b getting one of those too.

If you don't think I should who can do it in the Charlotte, NC area?

I put a Tera-low kit in my D300 during the winter. Wasn't too bad, I was really slow taking it apart and just used the Haynes or Chiltons (can't remember which, but one was better than the other on the T-case). Some parts of the manual weren't too clear, but after working on it for a while I figured it out. I have a Harbor Freight 12 ton hydraulic press, and had to get a bearing splitter for the last part. I found the 4:1 kit on sale for < $600 and since I wanted to upgrade the drivetrain anyway I decided that it was a better deal than putting the 3.15 set in my D20. HTH.

Worth's tranny and transfer don't have an oil in 'em (no leaks!) so don't ask him to help you. ;)

    Pretty easy IMHO.

With the T14, you won't have any trouble if you pay close attention and put everything back the way it was. At a minimum, you'll want to replace the blocking rings (synchro rings). The blocking rings are like clutch disks for the transmission - they provide friction between the gears to speed them up or slow them down so they mesh without clashing.

At a minimum, you'd install blocking rings and a small parts kit. The SPK contains gaskets, seals, needle bearings, thrust washers, and snap rings. The snap rings have different thicknesses and are used to adjust the mainshaft end play. Don't mix them up - use a caliper and replace the used snap rings with the same thickness.

You might also need to replace the bearings or some gears. Often rebuilders will routinely replace the bearings as part of a rebuild. Just follow the TSM and you'll be fine.

With the D20, unless it's broken, I'd just open it up, take it apart and inspect it. Depending on what you find, put it back together with new gaskets and seals, or replace some bearings. If you have broken gears, I'd say look for another D20 - lots of them are available. A bead of silicone sealer around the shim pack (after assembled) helps to prevent leaks.
