As I have looked at "other" T98 transmissions regarding their shift patterns, I have seen two variations.
1st that the "reverse" position is UP and to the left of first gear.
2nd that the "reverse" position is DOWN to the right of the fourth gear.
Mine.... UP and to the right of third gear, ( also have a spare T98 stored and it is also UP to the right ).
I want to either locate a "marked" factory mushroom style knob or at least... find a blank knob to be engraved if possible?

    Am I missing something here..?

    Thanks..!

All T98 and pre 1979 T18’s have the low gear up and
    to the right.
Only post 1978 T18’s are down and to the left.
I’ll go look see if I have any extra shift knobs.

This is incorrect. The 79+ T18s (and all T19s) are to the right and back for reverse vs to the right and forward for the earlier T18s and T98s. Both are still to the right.

Source: I have a T98 and a 1980 T18 sitting on my bench right now. You can tell the 79+ T18s by the bulge on the back left side of the transmission case and shifter housing.

Yes my mistake by late 1978 they shift down to the right not to left.

I checked and no I don’t have any spares to sell.
But here you can see on this NOS knob how they were all scribed.

That particular nos knob was from the early 1980’s.
Here you see the original Jeep knob from 1956, with a little paint added back on it.

Maybe you have two? I looked for an engraved knob as well. But I can only find white ones.

I did purchase the one that states "engraved"... It is a round ball....
Really looking for the "mushroom" OEM style....
I have been looking for a VERY long time for this needle in a hay stack..!
I know it is out there...just where is the question I guess.
I think I have stumbled on the "rare" part.... LOL
I also had found the "reversed shift pattern knob for the DANA about six months ago.... been looking for years.

From what I recall many of the D20 single stick transfer case knobs are near identical to the T98/T18 shift knobs concerning shape and threads.
One could certainly try engraving there own knob.
That’s why I have shown what the actually T98-A knob should look like.
The original knob engraving was pretty narrow lined and deep enough to hold paint.
Most of the original knobs have surface wear which has removed most of the paint and engraving.
Originally the engraving was straight and crisp.

This seems like a candidate for a 3D printing project. From someone with zero 3D printing experience.

Here I have two of the nearly indistinguishable D20 shift knobs. The older knob has slightly different ridges around it’s perimeter.
Sorry guys but these particular knobs are not available.
I am hoping to engrave one or both.

Funny you say this about a laser printer.... I am a retired machinist with a shop.... I have been looking at very small desk-type CNC machines in the last few weeks to add to my shop.
Not that this would make this... LOL
I have heard that the older IH trucks may have this knob as well....maybe..?
The guy I purchased the knob for the DANA 24 I purchased from him...he said it may be of the same as the IH series T98's..?

The mushroom shape would need some extra work. lettering on a round surface is also a pita to model on the computer. It can be done but It would be a few hours of fiddling. Once the first is done then it would be easy to change to have whatever pattern is needed.
