I have a T18 from a Ford truck that I was going to use the input shaft and bearing retainer from. I also have a T98 from a '64 Gladiator and it has an adapter to a small block chevy on it. Will the input shaft from the Ford fit the T98? I'd like to put this behind my 225. If that doesn't work, will the main shaft and rear adapter fit the T18?

I've got a Jeep T98 with a large hole adapter and am working on a T18 to put in my 71. I was going to use the T98 with the short Ford T18 input but the T98 has some rust damage inside and a T18 showed up cheap.

    As I understand it:
    • You can use the t18 input shaft in the T98 with two caveats:
      • The tooth count must match. The later T98s tend to have the same tooth count as a T18. I can go count teeth in the shop tomorrow to check what the T18 ones are.
      • You need to us special sized roller bearings to mate the T18 input shaft to the T98 main shaft. TheT98/T18 have different bearing sizes but the difference can be made up with the right rollers. Advance Adapters sells them: 716043 : 1-SET OF 14PCS/NEEDLE BRGS. | Advance Adapters
    • As I understand it, you can not use the adapter and T-98 mainshaft on a T-18, but I'm not sure what the differences are. My guess is you could use the adapter with by drilling new holes in the back of the case. I know the T18 has better oiling/bushings on the mainshaft and I'm guessing that's why it's not compatible. I don't know if you can put the complete T98 guts in the T18 case.
    • The T98 likely doesn't have the extra ears that make adaption to GM bellhousing easy. You can probably get around that making some bridge pieces like I did to catch one ear on my T18:

Thanks for the info! I guess the transmissions will have to be opened up and tooth counts verified.
