i am rebuilding a T90 transmission currently and I had read some news somewhere online about placing a magnet in the case before reassembling. Can anyone confirm if this is a valid idea, where the best spot to place one would be. And what’s the best solution for anchoring it to the case?

The magnets that I see are built into the drain plug. probably available most parts house or online. mike

Drain plug magnet would be my choice.

I had access to a permanent magnet, hot glued to the drivers side of the case near the rear flat low on the outside side

Agreed. The magnetic drain plug is sufficient and collects any worn metallic grit over the years and, perhaps any larger bits if there is a failure. The grit, if left to float around in the gear oil, can float around and go through the bearings and other wear surfaces. Over many many years and miles, it could lead to wear. I'd hesitate to call it "premature" wear. Especially given the limited number of miles most of our old JEEPs are driven now.

I have seen, as on the inside of the T18 I did, a larger round magnet that seemed to have been glued to the inside of the case. Quite a nit more surface area than the drain plug offers so, it stands to reason that such a magnet would have a better chance at collecting larger pieces. But if you suddenly lose an entire tooth or 4, no magnet is save the rest of the gear box.

I consider magnets and magnetic drain plugs cheap insurance and it gives me some kind of peace of mind. Are they necessary? Probably not.

In a million mile over the road truck......sure.

hi. just wondering how the rebuild went? did you need any special tools? was it pretty straightforward? approximately how long did it take you to rebuild it?

I am still working on it, going slow and taking my time. Brass drifts and a brass hammer are needed and a shop press helps. I got a simple Harbor Freight one for $99. I bought the trans/ t case on Craigslist so I could learn about it as I built and swap it into my jeep in the spring. I recommend pulling it apart before ordering parts as I missed some junk parts I still need to order. There are some great videos on YouTube shouting the disassembly and rebuild in great detail, so don’t be scared of it. If you had everything you needed ready to go, you could do the rebuild in a day pretty easy, although there are probably guys that can do it in a coulple of hours.

Thanks everybody! Does anyone have a P/N or place to order a plug with a magnet already in it or am I best to make my own?

I remember seeing large round magnets in the pans of GM transmissions back in the mid 80s...placing one on the D18 pan would be the same equivalent and allow a larger surface to collect on (maybe around the drain hole)

As I recall, some of the earlier year C6 corvettes came with them from the factory. Don't remember if my 08 came with one or if I added it.

question...what are the odds a magnet lets loose? wouldn't that be more catastrophic than some metal shavings?
a magnetic plug makes sense, but to put one inside the pan seems dangerous to me.

Most of those drain plugs are standard pipe threads. I'd say as long as you have a steel plug, stick one of those rare earth magnets to the end of it...those wont go anywhere. Stick one to your fridge and try to get it off if you have doubts. That way when you remove the plug, you can see if there are any metal bits on it, clean it easily, etc.

That’s my plan if I couldn’t find one already made. Those rare earth mags are crazy strong!

You can get small rare earth magnets with holes in them. I runbrass drain plugs and plan on drilling and threading blind holes in them and putting these kinds of magnets on each of them Both Axles Engine tranny and transfer case. WHY NOT

Magnetic drain plugs are readily available all over the internet and at many hardware stores. A simple internet search brought up hundreds of options. All you need to know is the thread pitch, diameter, and type. If you want more protection than just a drain plug put one in place of the fill plug as well.

T-18's as well as many transmissions used magnets that were epoxied in place. Nothing new there.
