I'm in the process of rebuilding my T18 and I'm stuck trying to remove the output shaft assembly. The arm that controls the reverse gear (I believe) is getting in the way. Anybody have experience with this?

Maybe it depends on the year, but my reverse shift fork comes off with the top. Mine's a '79.

the shaft that holds the reverse arm has a roll pin through it (on outside of case) when removed that arm can be moved out of the way........least wise that's how it was with mine

Jim how did you get the pin out? It looks like the pin needs to be hit from the inside of the case outward. Refering to the pin towards the top of the case as seen on the second pic. Thanks

The protrusion om the outside of the case in the second pic should have a 1/8" hole for a pin that goes through that shaft.......I used a small drift to get it out

What BKD said. Be aware that little pin is tapered and must be removed in the right direction.
You can usually get them apart without removing the arm. Drop the cluster gear to the bottom of the case (remove counter shaft), shift 1st/reverse gear forward into second gear, remove the 3/4 synchronizer assembly, and remove output bearing. Shift the reverse idler gear forward so the lever is towards the rear of the transmission all the way and you should be able to lift the mainshaft out. Then you can drive out the reverse idler shaft and remove reverse gear and the lever. I do it this way all the time because sometimes it's a pain to get the little pin out.

Jim and Nick thanks for your help. Got that pin out by hitting it on the front side toward the rear. Small little tapered bugger.

Cool! glad you got it out. Sometimes they rust in place. Too bad you're not close by. We could have it rebuilt in a couple hours...

Lol, yeah, it takes some time. Make sure you use transmission assembly lube or petroleum jelly to hold them in place. DO NOT use grease. The grease doesn't mix well with gear oil and can plug up oiling passages/clearances. Not enough heat to melt it away.

vaseline works great to hold needle bearing in place , your going to need dummy shaft to install cluster gear . a few thousands smaller in diameter and same length as cluster gear .lay some string in bottom of gear box under cluster gear before you start putting main gear assy back together will help pull it back up .

It's been awahile, but I think I used a piece of PVC tubing for my dummy shaft. I have a piece of PVC and a piece of coppr tubing. I used one for the t-case and one for the tranny, but I don't recall which one I used on which.

That's why I use transmission assembly lube (Transjel). Haven't needed a dummy shaft except for a 205 in over 10 years :)

Got another question for you guys. I removed the needle bearings from the reverse idler gear. I would like to replace these, but I'm having a hard time finding just the needle bearings. Any ideas where to find them? They are 0.125" thick and 0.986" long.
