    Great progress. (y)

I saw that white one in the background of one of the pickup shots, was wondering about that one.

You went back for it or had two trailers?

Good eye Muzkip! Yes we went back for it. Bought them as a package deal.
PeteL: The transmission did have water in it but thawing out didn't change anything... the gears were badly rusted. I'll have some photos of that process later.

Next project was to get the transmission and transfer case off. Wish we had taken more pictures of the tear down but we didn't :bash:. I'll see if I can find a picture of the transmission case when we first opened it.. rust was everywhere, water had come through the shift tower over the years sitting. The transfer case looks pretty good. Next up was to test the engine and make sure it runs. I'll see if I can upload a video of that if I can figure out how.

Once the transmission and transfer case were out, we hooked up a gas can and battery to the engine and it fired up after a few tries! I can't seem to get the video to load though. Next we pulled the engine and got it on a stand to get cleaned up, and eventually drain the oil and replace the oil pan and valve cover gaskets. Almost time to dive into the transmission rebuild...

Sorry for the delay. My laptop bit the dust a while back and I have a lot of photos on it. I’ll keep updating the build from what I have on my phone. Just figured out how to post from it.

Next up I rebuilt the transmission using all new gears. It went together without any major issues. Lots of helpful YouTube videos on this.

Thanks, thats my dads shop. He keeps it squeaky clean.. you'll probably see mine later-we've since moved the jeep to my place. Not quite as organized over here haha. That is my Grandpas 66 F250. Looking forward to sprucing it up and running around in it once this jeeps back together..

I had to get through 3 layers of paint to get to the original green (at least what was left of it). The faint remaining traces of the 4 wheel drive stenciled letters were barely visible so I decided to enhance it some. Cut out a stencil and painted it to look kind of aged like the rest of the Jeep. Took a while but time well spent in my opinion. One of my favorite details on these old jeeps!

Love seeing your photos. I'm pretty sure you have a military windshield and possibly military front fenders.
My very original '56 has those military parts, apparently not uncommon to pull them off the shelf in those days.
I'm not totally sure about your fenders, but they appear to have an original coat of OD showing from under the faded factory color.
I'm keeping mine all faded with the dents etc. cuz I like it showing it's history.
Serial # is 29,xxx, and I figure it was built in early '56 (Feb or Mar?), has rear shackles.
    - Question, ... Some have suggested a way to keep and protect the original patina by "spraying it all over with wd-40, then wiping it down." ?? .... Anybody ever try such a thing??

I have suspected the same on the fenders, definitely OD green under the faded factory Julip Green. What would indicate the windshield is military? Unfortunately it is not a ventilating windshield. I did find one of the drum brake backing plates was OD green with military number stamps while the other three were black.
    SN # is 34xxx

I used a product called Fluid Film to coat the body, spray it on and wipe it down, protects the undercarriage/frame nicely as well. It is lanolin based i believe. Smells a little weird at first but that goes away quickly. Works great, makes the faded paint really pop and lasts longer than WD40 from what i can tell. Not as wet either to the touch once it soaks in.

    Possibly the vacuum wiper motor(s)?

The one on my M38A1-C is slightly different than my '56 CJ5. (Military one has a manual assist thumb lever.)

Hmmm, ... Fluid Film? Where do you get it? Never heard of it. I'll have to test it on one of my parts. Oh, and how did you take the paint layers off of the tailgate? Paint stripper? What kind? Some has been taken off the market, I ran out of that great pink stuff years ago. Your 'antiquing' technique on the tailgate '4 Wheel Drive' looks great!

One of the old guys said many moons ago that the military windshield had a more extreme arc to the 'canvas top channel' across the top of the windshield. It droops more to port and starboard, and is higher in the middle, while the standard civilian channel parallels the top of the windshield more closely. (Mine happens to be a military split windshield.) And, there's two small bolt holes (one above the other) to the left of the driver's windshield latch to mount the wiper vacuum control.
Several guys have said the ventilating windshield was never a military issue. I don't know, but I'd love to have one too.

fluid film is at the flaps around here, it will collect dirt.,should be applied at least twice a year when exposed to the elements.its used as undercoating to stop rust ,biodegrades, and should be applied at least twice a year if its exposed to the elements.
this can affect soft top/ bikini fitment.

good to know about the windshield! Fluid film at Napa. Probably need a couple cans to do a whole Jeep I think I maybe used 3 total with the undercarriage. Wiped it down real good on top. To get the old paint off I used heavy duty paint stripper and a razor. I think I did a little wet sanding too. Took a good long time. But I was determined to get some original paint.
